Essential functions: * Mows lawns and trims grass around walks, flower beds, trees and walls. * Prunes shrubs and trees, at the direction of the immediate Supervisor, to shape and improve growth. * Removes fallen or damaged leaves, branches, and twigs using mowers, tractors and other hand and power tools. * Lays out and maintains flower beds, mulch beds, or other decorative vegetation. * Maintains and sharpens tools and makes minor repairs on equipment, as needed. * Plants, fertilizes, waters and uses weed and insect control products at the direction of the immediate Supervisor to maintain grass, flowers, trees and shrubs. * Removes snow and ice from walks, roads and driveways, utilizing hand tools, machines or vehicles. * Spreads salt, picks up litter, rakes, removes debris from hard surfaces. . * Cleans drainage ditches and culverts, including, but not limited to the filling of potholes and the sweeping of accumulated debris along curb lines. * Maintains driveways and parking lots. * Repairs fences, gates, walls, irrigation systems, walks and outbuildings using carpentry, masonry and painting tools. * May perform marking and maintenance of sports fields. * Performs routine cleaning and maintenance on gardening and grounds equipment. * May operate trucks and assorted power equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws. * May participate in the setup and tear-down of event furniture, such as tables, chairs and tents. * May participate in the movement of furniture, supplies and material. * Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated. * Complies with all company safety and risk management policies and procedures. * Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner. * Participates in regular safety meetings, safety training and hazard assessments. * Applies all applicable OSHA and related local safety requirements to all assigned work. * Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. * May perform preventative maintenance on lawn equipment and building equipment. POSITION SUMMARY: as a vital member of the Facilities and Grounds team, supports the maintenance of Lake Valley Camp to ensure a positive experience for the entire camp community. POSITION AVAILABILITY: Start Date: May 12 and End Date: August 10 The Groundskeeper works during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from May through August at Lake Valley Camp in Boscobel, Wisconsin. Assigned work on weekend days is occasionally required. Work an average of 40 hours per week and the schedule may include weekends. Hours may be flexible due to weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances. BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY The Groundskeeper spends a large portion of work time mowing, weeding, and trimming the camp property. Examples of specific duties include: Mowing grass, using zero-turn and push mowers Weed trimming throughout camp Gravel road repairs, and raking gravel from grass along camp roads Trimming branches along camp roads Raking/clearing creek debris Replacing wood chips where needed Splitting and stacking firewood Rebuilding firepit rings Assist the Facilities and Grounds Coordinator and/or Facilities Assistant in maintenance and camp improvement projects. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS This position is compensated at a rate of $16.25 per hour, pre-tax. Summer seasonal staff are paid on a bi-weekly basis and are classified as exempt, seasonal employees. Lunch is provided when working during camp sessions, and on-site, shared housing can be provided for staff who live outside the local Boscobel area (discussion and agreement required). Must be skilled or well trained in using various tools and machinery such as weed trimmers, zero-turn and push mowers, tree trimming tools, etc. REQUIREMENTS & CERTIFICATIONS Must be able to pass PEAK's motor vehicle background check and driver training and safely drive PEAK vehicles, including a 12-passenger van. Must be at least 18 and/or have a high school diploma or GED to apply. Experience in grounds care is required. REPORTING AND RELATIONSHIPS The Groundskeeper works directly with and reports to the Facilities and Grounds Manager or designee with direction from the Camp Director and Assistant Directors. PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS The mental and physical requirements and work environment conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Staff must be ready for new experiences and maintain a consistent level of energy all summer long. Position requires standing, stooping, sitting, walking long distances on uneven terrain (5+ miles a day), and occasionally lifting up to 40 pounds with or without assistance. The camp environment is often hot, rainy, with bugs or other wildlife. Staff must be able to work outside in a nature setting for sustained periods of time without air conditioning. All PEAK Initiative properties, including Lake Valley Camp and the Milwaukee Program Center, are substance-free environments.
