JOB TITLE: TRIO Peer Mentor DEPARTMENT AND LOCATION OF JOB: TRIO, Student Support Center, Learning Resource Center 106, FVCC Kalispell Campus ELIGIBILITY: LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT: Academic Calendar Year 2024/2025 PAY RANGE: $13.00 to $14.00 per hour depending on experience NUMBER OF POSITIONS HIRING: Up to 4 WORK SCHEDULE: Flexible schedule between Monday and Friday during FVCC operating hours. This position may work 4 to 10 hours per week. DRESS CODE: Casual wear with appropriate coverage POSITION PURPOSE/ROLE: Supports, encourages, and helps other students make the most out of their academic careers. Provides information and assistance with study skills and time management, in addition to directing students to TRIO services and campus resources. Assists with planning and participating in community building events. Conducts outreach to encourage student connection to academic supports and TRIO/campus events. Represents and promotes the TRIO program at FVCC. Participates in training prior to the start of Fall Semester in August. Attends weekly group meetings/trainings during the academic year. TRIO Mentors are supervised by a TRIO SSS staff member(s). POSITION DUTIES: Staffs the First Gen Den; Assists TRIO students with time management, study skills and goal setting in support of both personal and academic success; Share information and explain to students about TRIO and campus resources, including Eagle Mail and Eagle Online; Assists students in accessing TRIO specific resources, such as Pear Deck and Financial Literacy 101 (both are online platforms); Helps TRIO students troubleshoot academic issues and make appropriate referrals to tutoring or other academic support, including faculty, staff, and departments; Plans and hosts events for TRIO students; May hold regularly scheduled meetings with students; Assists with student outreach by email, text and phone; Maintain confidentiality with student information; Assists and attends program orientations, trainings, workshops, and meetings (may participate in field trips); Performs related duties as needed - may include some weekend and evening events. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Current FVCC student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits per semester, AND must have completed at least one semester of college AND received a minimum of a B grade in 100 level courses; Must be in good academic standing at the college with demonstrated progress towards degree; Must have the ability and skills to respect multiple cultural ways of knowing, seeing and living while appreciating and honoring differences. Effective and respectful interpersonal/verbal and written communication skills; Strong time management, self-motivation, and organizational skills; Willingness to learn, grow, and be a part of a supportive team. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Passionate about the TRIO Student Support Services Program and has a strong desire to assist and serve their fellow students. Knowledge of services and resources available to students; Background similar to TRIO participants is a plus. STUDENT SKILL DEVELOPMENT: Communication skills, critical thinking, effective reasoning, leadership, organization, group facilitation, professionalism, customer service skills, time management skills PREDICTED OUTCOME: Practical competence, critical thinking, collaboration, communicating effectively, increased confidence, professionalism, time management, leadership STUDENT EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES: Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credits for fall or spring semester to qualify for student employment. Students may not work beyond 19 hours per week during semester. Student workers shall be actively engaged; no use of cell phones (except in case of emergency) or social media. Student workers shall demonstrate a commitment to the job with adherence to work schedule, effective communication/interpersonal skills, and quality customer service skills to be a representative of FVCC.
