The University of Karlsruhe was founded as a polytechnical school (Polytechnische Schule) on 7 October 1825.
Universität Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe University) goes back to the Polytechnical School established in 1825.
After its substantial reform, it developed to a model institute from 1832.
From 1870, this type of polytechnical school was also established in Prussia.
A central computer laboratory was founded in 1966.
On 2 August 1984, the university received Germany's first email.
The Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung (Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research) was founded at the university in 1985.
The university also cooperated extensively with the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Research Centre), and this relationship was formalised on 6 April 2006 when Professor Horst Hippler and Doctor Dieter Ertmann from the University of Karlsruhe, and Professor Manfred Popp and Assistant Jur.
50 years after the foundation of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe and 181 years after the foundation of Universität Karlsruhe, both institutions were successful in the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal States 2006.
In February 2008, the merger of the university and the research centre to form KIT was agreed by the state of Baden-Württemberg and Germany's federal government.
KIT was formally established on 1 October 2009.
