Job Responsibilities
Maintain security and safety of correctional facility, inmates and staff;

Description
The Correctional Deputy is a dual-trained position in both custody and dispatch. Under supervision, supervises the conduct of prisoners at county holding facilities. The Correctional Deputy assists with and performs booking and screening procedures; assists with the transportation of prisoners; receives and transmits radio and telephone communications and dispatches law enforcement and other public safety personnel. The Correctional Deputy answers questions concerning prisoner's and inmate's status. This is an entry-level position in the Correctional Deputy series. Incumbents perform many assignments in a training and learning capacity. When sufficient job knowledge and work performance have been demonstrated and completed, an incumbent may be promoted to the level of Correctional Deputy II.
Examples of Duties
Depending upon assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Supervise prisoner conduct during booking procedures, meals, and other activities, and during detention in the county jail.
Assists with receiving, booking, searching, and fingerprinting prisoners.
Takes periodic counts of prisoners and escorts them during movement between facilities.
Completes logs and records and assists with reports and release information.

Possession of appropriate physical and mental qualifications to pass a Public Safety Officer physical entrance examination and psychological entrance examination.
Successful completion of the California Penal Code 832 training and STC Jail Core Academy within one (1) year of initial employment. Successful completion of a 120-hour Basic Complaint and Dispatcher's Course.
Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver's License.
Training and Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge would be some previous experience in working with people in a setting requiring group control. Also, completion of high school or the equivalent.

Under the direction of the Corporal, the Confinement Officer is responsible for maintaining the safety and security for employees, inmates and visitors of the Allen County Jail by upholding the laws, rules and regulations that pertain to the Office of the Sheriff, as well as those that relate to the detention of individuals housed within the Allen County Jail.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Responsible for the security and safety checks of employees, inmates and visitors of the Allen County Jail.
Searches individuals to be detained for weapons and other contraband.
Oversees detainees complete their allowable activities, including counsel visitation, making commissary purchases, mail distribution and telephone calls.
Regularly inspects jail facility, ensuring security and monitoring the general health and welfare condition of detainees, and ensuring cleanliness and security of cell areas.
Transports and escorts the inmates to and from the jail, courts, visits and medical facilities.
Responsible for inspecting, accounting and distributing meals for inmates.
Performs all necessary booking procedures, including photographing detainees, and completing required forms and intake reports.
Receives and logs all money and personal property as required by standing orders.
Ensures inmates receive their daily medicine and receive medical treatment if needed.
Conducts routine “shakedowns” of all cells and dormitories for contraband, and prepares written report of findings.
Performs accurate data entry.
Occasionally testifies in court.
Interacts with other law enforcement agencies and the general public regarding inmates.
Very frequent interactions with the inmates.
Attends seminars and in-service training as required.
Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Confinement Officer works in a County detention facility with potential physical and verbally violent adults. Very frequent standing with the ability to walk around freely, frequently lifting over forty pounds, typing with attention to detail, frequently bending, pushing and/or pulling loads, reaching over head and kneeling with some exposure to body fluids, chemicals, noxious odors/fumes and noise. Frequent equipment monitoring with detailed inspection and frequent proofreading. Occassional physical exertion to subdue and restrain violent inmates exists.

Step Pay Plan: The Pamunkey Regional Jail (PRJ) maintains a step play plan for sworn positions which provides internal parity by establishing a common set of salary ranges for each rank. Entry level rates, maximum rates and the systematic method for employees to move within the salary range are uniform and applied consistently for all employees governed by the plan. There are ten pay grades each with a defined entry rate and maximum rate, and each pay grade has twenty-five steps. This is a locked, secure, jail-like environment housing juveniles who are charged with delinquent acts, many of which are violent such as battery, robbery and murder. The safety of this community, as well as our staff and residents depend upon Detention Officers who have the ability to act quickly, responsibly, and fairly, with compassion, consistency, and control.
Work is performed on carpeted and cement floors. There is a considerable amount of walking in the center to escort juveniles from one area to another and to monitor rooms every 4 to 15 minutes. Detention staff must possess the ability to visually inspect a cell room through the door window before entry.
Physical confrontations with residents and cleaning require physical fitness, endurance, a moderate amount of strength and mental awareness. Officers must be physically able to subdue a resident who is fighting or out of control. Incumbent selects applicable methods to take authoritative action in response to situational demands. Incumbent's work frequently involves non-routine problem-solving to gain cooperation of law offenders in situations that may jeopardize the safety of the public and/or incumbent. Incumbent's work is primarily reviewed through direct observation by supervisor for compliance with Department policies and procedures. Errors in decisions or work are usually prevented through procedural safeguards, and detected by supervisory review, and may lead to endangerment of self and/or others.
III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, various law enforcement agencies, court personnel, employment staffing companies, program participants and their families, and the public for a variety of purposes, including exchanging information, explaining policies and procedures, and supervising participants.
Incumbent reports directly to Head Corrections Officer.
IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs duties in a detention facility and in the field, involving sitting/walking at will, walking/standing and/or sitting for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, bending at waist, reaching, handling/grasping/fingering objects, close and far vision, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication. No prolonged extreme physical demands are associated with normal duties or assignments. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the hazards associated with jail operations, such as communicable diseases and potentially dangerous, violent, and abusive program participants, and must respond swiftly, rationally, and decisively in the situation.
Incumbent occasionally works evening, weekend, irregular and/or extended hours.

This position is responsible for overseeing and supervising up to 350 residents and the day-to-day security of the Duvall Residential Center and its immediate surroundings. Incumbent in this position is responsible for the operations of the facility, public safety, and client accountability. Incumbent must adhere to evidence-based practices. The incumbent in this position performs the majority of their duties in a correctional residential facility and has a wide latitude to make decisions related to public safety and staff safety, combined with offender safety and accountability to records management, maintenance and retention, dissemination of customer information, and administrative services. Errors in judgment could cause irreparable consequences, injury or loss of work hours to the agency. Incumbent is on call 24-hours a day, seven (7) days a week.
