How does it work?

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Human Resources Intern will directly assist the HR team with a wide range of projects related to HR compliance, recruiting, onboarding/orientation, employee benefits, and volunteer intern programs. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills s/he may have acquired in school related to his or her areas of interest and apply them in a professional setting. S/he will gain a better understanding of the role that Human Resources can play in a non-profit setting and be better prepared to work in the arena of human resources and the nonprofit sector. The candidate will also have opportunities to network with the programs, finance, and development staff
**8-Week Internship Program
Start date: June 9th- August 1st**
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist the HR team with activities that promote the vision, mission, and values of DC Central Kitchen
Participate in the creation, planning, and implementation of learning and growth tracks program.
Process paperwork including, but not limited to data entry, background checks, performing reference and other pre-employment screening.
Assist with the planning and scheduling summer All Staff Meeting event.
Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.
Filing and other office support for HR staff
Assist in implementing HR policies and procedures by maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations concerning employment. Adhere to all safety rules and regulations
Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by management and / or duties and tasks needed to drive the vision, mission, and values of DC Central Kitchen.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Current college student with a desire in Human Resources
Self-starter, comfortable working independently and collaboratively with a team
Demonstrated ability to maintain 100% confidentiality.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to think clearly and reason well, and willingness to ask questions, solve problems and figure things out.
Energetic and creative
Exceptional organizational skills: ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be capable of independent local travel.
May occasionally move Audio/Visual and other office equipment or lightweight items weighing up to 20 pounds for various meeting and event needs. Some functions of this position may require moderate physical activity, including transporting, positioning, installing, or removing office equipment items, such as printers, computers, phones, and so on.
Needs to occasionally move about inside the office and commercial kitchen space to access supplies, materials, file cabinets, office machinery, etc.; constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; constantly positions self to access and maintain computer equipment; and must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 50% of the time.
Must be able to work in an environment where exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and a variety of odors is common.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
