The City and employee shall pay for all required coverage, insurance, etc. in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, including but not limited to: Medicare, Unemployment, Workers Compensation, Paid Family and Medical Leave Program, etc. POSITION SUMMARY The purpose of this position is to support maintenance tasks in the Streets, Storm Water, and Parks divisions. Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor or designee, assists staff in performing regular, routine, and well-known, semi-skilled maintenance tasks within City-owned facilities and public rights-of-way. This position will work in both a crew and individual setting. May provide directions to other seasonal workers, volunteers, and temporary workers. This position provides support activities for a variety of community special events. Essential Functions 1. Performs routine tasks, such as weeding, raking, watering, mowing, edging, shoveling, field preparation, custodial duties, and litter pick-up. 2. Performs light construction, repair, landscaping, and facility maintenance duties as assigned. 3. Cleans and repairs trails, sidewalks, streets, playgrounds, play equipment, grounds, buildings, fences, and other public-owned assets. 4. Performs minor and semi-skilled facility maintenance operations, such as replacing drive belts and mower blades, unplugging toilets, and changing light bulbs and filters. 5. Conducts removal of brush and debris from park grounds, open spaces, storm water facilities, and public rights-of-way. 6. Work with temporary workers, contract labor, and other seasonal employees to ensure that City standards are met in maintenance and operations tasks. 7. Reports needed repairs, safety hazards, or other conditions that could affect staff or the public's health, safety, security, or energy conservation to immediate supervisor. 8. Provides support activities for a variety of community special events, including but not limited to supporting the event management team, traffic control, site preparation, and site clean-up. 9. Picks up and delivers equipment, materials, parts, and supplies as required. 10. Responds to the daily needs of building, park, and field users. Other Job Functions Assists others who may be hired for specific custodial, landscaping, facility, and repair services. Follows City operation policies and procedures. Establishes and maintains an effective system of communication within the City and establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others. Provides quality customer service; and deals courteously with the public. May be subject to callback during emergencies on a 24-hour basis and may be required to work occasional evening, weekends, or holidays during special events. Performs other duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications + Job Demands MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Experience, and Training: Must be 18 years old or older. Some high school education. Two years of experience performing construction, maintenance, and/or repair tasks. Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license and meet the City's minimum driver approval standards. CPR/First Aid certification preferred. Valid Flagger's Card preferred. Applicants are subject to Washington State Patrol background check and testing for alcohol and/or use of controlled substances. Knowledge of: City operation policies and procedures. Safe operation of various large and small power equipment and hand tools. Light construction techniques, standards, and practices. Basic cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques. Cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment. Safe working methods and procedures. Emergency response procedures. CPR/First Aid. Verbal, numeric, and spatial aptitudes. Ability to: Operate a variety of motor vehicles, including pick-up trucks, flatbeds, medium-size dump trucks, towing trailers, and medium sized riding mowers. Operate small engine equipment, such as small mowers, line trimmers, chainsaws, and leaf blowers in a safe manner. Perform basic and semi-skilled mechanical tasks. Lift up to 50 pounds. Learn City policies and procedures. Listen and take directions. Communicate effectively in oral and written form. Interact professionally with various levels of employees, officials, and customers. Perform moderately medium to heavy manual activities. Efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment. Display patience and persuasiveness when interacting with other people. JOB DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed outdoors. Outside work will require exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions. Must frequently stand, walk, talk or hear, taste or smell, grip or feel with hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and lift objects up to 25 pounds; and occasionally sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift objects up to and exceeding 100 pounds. Work environment has exposure to outdoor environment, noise, extreme temperatures, vibration, dust, fumes, gases, poor ventilation, electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, and sharp objects/tool. Necessary aptitudes include perception of detail, finger and manual dexterity, eye/hand/foot coordination requiring close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point), depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships). May occasionally require work beyond normal working hours.
