    The Naturalist II role involves planning and directing a comprehensive nature education program, supervising staff, and managing natural resource areas, including the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary. Performs supervisory naturalist work in County parks and natural resource areas. The work involves planning and directing educational and interpretive programs and managing designated natural resource areas. The work requires a degree and considerable experience. The worker reports to a technical supervisor. Essential Job Functions Supervises the development and presentation of educational and interpretive programs: prepares/reviews program materials, organizes displays, and evaluates program effectiveness. Confers with educational institutions regarding program interests, participation and evaluation. Supervises staff engaged in naturalist duties: assigns and reviews work, and takes actions to adjust work, staffing and operations to meet requirements; trains staff in new procedures. Participates in and initiates actions regarding hiring, transfer, promotion, payroll, leaves, performance and other personnel actions. Manages assigned natural resource areas: designs, constructs and maintains exhibits; supervises area maintenance; coordinates use of area for events and special projects; coordinates area improvements and renovations; maintains records and prepares reports regarding activities. Obtains bids for contract work, establishes purchasing accounts with suppliers. Provides technical advice to the unit and the community regarding natural resource and environmental issues. Recommends on site improvements and master plan development. Manages volunteers in activities related to educational programs and natural resources management.
