Through its partnership with the US Fish & Wildlife Service (“FWS”), MobilizeGreen is implementing the FWS' Maintenance and Infrastructure Fellowship program for participants. Fellows will work on a variety of maintenance projects on a network of public lands and waters called the National Wildlife Refuge System. The Maintenance Fellowships typically are for 26 or 52 weeks. As a Fellow, you will work in a beautiful setting, learning maintenance, project management, equipment use, and leadership development. The fellow will work with supervisors, trainer and MIFP Coordinators to track hours of On-the-Job Learning. Lead a small project where they plan for equipment, labor, supplies and develop a site safety plan at their station. Complete and present a final report of the project that includes photos, cost estimation versus actual expenses, and summary of the work done. This project will be referred to as a Capstone. One Capstone Project will be completed during the first year of the program, then an additional project each six-month increment of the program. The Neurological Surgery Skull Base Fellow will be involved as an assisting surgeon in all skull base, endoscopic and complex cranial cases. The fellow will follow the pre-operative as well as postoperative course of the patient. The successful candidate will be joining an enthusiastic and dynamic group. The lab is very active, with the opportunities to publish papers, submit grant proposals, present at technical meetings, and work with partners in industry and university / government. There are currently several areas of work within my lab which span within the broad field of biomaterials and include the following specific topic areas: 1. Design and synthesis of novel polymeric materials for dental and biomedical applications: the major project funded in the lab aims at harnessing ecological interactions within the oral biofilm and host enzyme derived degradation of the tooth substrate to develop novel restorative materials capable of withstanding the challenges posed by the use in the oral environment. These challenges include mechanical loading, bacteria-derived acid demineralization of the tooth, degradation of the material by salivary and bacteria-derived enzymes, as well as substrate degradation by water percolation and host metalloproteinases. 2. Test materials under physiological conditions in vitro: material resistance to degradation under physiologically-relevant conditions is the main focus of the development in the lab. Testing includes microbiology assays, mechanical testing and combinations thereof. Polymerization behavior is assessed with spectroscopic techniques, isolated or in tandem with mechanical testing. The successful candidate will have experience in material characterization techniques and manuscript preparation. Ability to work independently and contribute ideas is essential. We are looking for a motivated individual, with the mindset of contributing to the group in a meaningful way. The lab of Stephen Back, M.D., Ph.D. at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, in close collaboration with the laboratories of Jacob Raber, Ph.D.at OHSU and of Cecily Bishop, Ph.D. at Oregon State University (OSU) in Corvallis, Oregon, is seeking a candidate for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to study the effects of fetal and neonatal intermittent cerebral hypoxemia on brain development. The lab currently has NIH funding for studies to explore the sequelae of maternal sleep apnea on fetal and postnatal brain development. Despite the fact that maternal sleep apnea commonly occurs in roughly 20-40% of human pregnancies, the long-term impact on brain development and neurobehavior is unknown. Studies are currently underway in a fetal ovine model to understand the effects of maternal intermittent hypoxia using a multidisciplinary approach that utilizes high field ex vivo MRI, hippocampal electrophysiology and neuronal morphometric studies to define the impact of maternal intermittent hypoxia on fetal brain development. All of these approaches are well established in the lab (see for example: Sci Transl Med 5(168):168ps2, 2013; Journal of Neuroscience, 39(40):7853-7871, 2019). The position will involve complementary pioneering studies to be conducted both at OHSU and OSU to study the postnatal neurobehavioral effects of intermittent maternal hypoxia during pregnancy on the offspring as neonates and young adults. Required Qualifications PhD with a strong background in neuroscience. Solid experience with large animal handling for experimental studies is required. The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is integral to the healthcare, education and research missions at OHSU. We provide clinical services at OHSU hospitals and collaborate with the VA Portland Health Care System and Hillsboro Medical Center. We specialize in providing excellent perioperative care and anesthesia services to our patients using state-of-the-art technology and pharmacologic tools with an emphasis on patient safety. Pre-operative assessment is facilitated by electronic data collecting systems and is integral to minimizing patient risk. In the operating rooms our anesthesiologists work in care teams with our fellows, residents, and nurse anesthetists as well as independently. Pre- and post-operative care is under the medical supervision of our department. We play a prominent role in the caring for patients in the cardiovascular, neurosciences, and virtual intensive care units. In the ICU our team includes anesthesiology intensivists, critical care fellows, physician assistants/nurse practitioners, and residents. The role of our team in the ICUs is comprehensive and critical to achieving the highest quality outcomes for our patients. Function/Duties of Position The mission of the Neuroanesthesiology Fellowship Program is to develop expert clinicians and leaders by providing advanced training in the perioperative management of patients with complex neurologic pathologies in a learning atmosphere that nurtures intellectual curiosity and innovation. The program is designed to offer 12 months of post-residency clinical subspecialty anesthesia training for adults with intracranial masses, neurovascular pathologies, and spine pathologies in diverse settings including the operating room, MRI hybrid suite, and interventional radiology suite. The fellow will have the opportunity to team up with a cohort of people across multiple disciplines, including neurosurgeons, neurologists, and intraoperative monitoring technicians to provide advanced subspecialty care in a variety of craniotomy approaches including awake craniotomies. The fellow will also have dedicated rotations in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit as well as opportunities to supplement their education with electives in neuroradiology, pediatric neuroanesthesia, and intraoperative encephalography. The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the University's missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. Appointee shall have a demonstrated competence in patient care. Teaches junior trainees and support staff in their area of professional expertise. Teaching is done through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year and through teaching in the course of performing their own job by modeling best practices, mentoring trainees, guiding learning through delegating graduated and focused levels of responsibility. Provides an outstanding level of professional performance (e.g. quality of clinical care for clinical faculty).
