ESL Instructor job description

Provide student-centered, hybrid instruction for English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education, and High school equivalency classes to students from various cultural and educational backgrounds. Assist students with setting and achieving SMART goals. Maintain required documentation.

• Provide classroom instruction both face to face and via Zoom to students from various cultural backgrounds and levels of proficiency
• Prepare course syllabi in compliance with federal, state, and local requirements
• Prepare daily lesson plans that coincide with the Texas Standards Curriculum. Submit lesson plans to the Lead Instructor on a weekly basis.
• Incorporate basic computer, job readiness, and job search skills into instruction
• Utilize Burlington English and Essential Education as Distance Education curricula.
• Assist students with setting and achieving short and long term SMART goals
• Ensure that student goals and achievements are documented on ITEC plans
• Refer students to the Intake Coordinator for testing as needed
• Maintain student assessment forms
• Meet and document all state-mandated performance measures for AEL gains and outcomes.
• Maintain required student files in accordance with HGAC and Alliance requirements
• Maintain and submit daily attendance sheets to the TEAMS specialist
• Submit one success story per session to the Program Manager at the end of each session
• Meet individually with students as needed during the program period
• Follow up with students with poor attendance as needed
• Provide discipline and guidelines for students in the classroom.
• Complete required pre-service and in-service training
• Attend required meetings
• Some travel to various sites required
• Other duties as assigned


REQUIREMENTS:

• Must have a Bachelor’s degree (From the United States or the evaluated equivalent)
• Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, TEAMS, Zoom, and Adobe
• Experience with Distance Learning Curricula
• Experience with remote instruction
• Strong preference will be given to applicants with ESL teaching certification and/or teaching experience with adult students and students from different cultural backgrounds
• Bilingual a plus
• Access to a vehicle

Summary

Maintains a classroom environment that facilitates the teaching of Adult Basic Education, English Language Development, and Special Education and basic subjects required to pass the GED or equivalent examination. Teaches one or more subjects including, but not limited to reading, mathematics, and language arts.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

* Provides classroom instruction in the areas of basic education subjects including career planning, social adjustment, and general life skills information.
* May instruct conversational English, and ideas and customs in English to students with limited English proficiency.
* Maintains records including testing, daily inmate/detainee work, attendance and general record keeping.
* Evaluates and maintains inmate/detainee academic progress.
* Provides individual tutoring.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
* Two (2) years of relevant teaching experience preferred.
* Valid teaching certificate from the state Department of Education or comparable authority required.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

The HSE/GED Math/Language and ESL Instructor will teach students the necessary skills and knowledge for successful completion of the GED math or language examination, using a pre-developed curriculum. A position is also available for English as a Second Language (ESL). The instructor monitors and grades course work, facilitates class meetings, and regularly engages with students in order to help them achieve their goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teach one or more math or language GED course/s and/or ESL courses.
   
2. Develop positive working relationships with students.
   
3. Foster community in the online medium.
   
4. Monitor student progress regularly.
   
5. Prepare and facilitate high engagement learning activities for weekly online class meetings.
   
6. Use effective retention strategies in order to maintain online students.
   
7. Ensure online students are administered the approved pre and post assessments.
   
8. Guide students regarding how to obtain their GED (if needed), transition into college, and obtain employment to earn a living wage.
   
9. Work with other instructors and professionals to support individual students needs and progress.
   
10. Attend staff meetings and in-service training, as required.
    
11. Be sensitive to diverse cultural differences within the online classroom.
12. Support college activities and special events through attendance and/or participation.
    
13. Comply with all College policies, rules, and regulations.
    
14. Remain current through a program of professional development.
    
15. Performs all other duties assigned by the Career Navigator, Dean of CTE, and/or President.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices and buildings, frequently lift, carry, push, pull and maneuver office supplies as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS

This position are located in Pampa and Childress and operate in a professional environment, routinely uses standard office equipment (i.e. computers, phones, copy and fax machines, filing cabinets) and is in a high traffic area with continual interruptions. Software commonly used includes Microsoft Office, Zoom, and various other educational applications. Some travel may be required for this position.
