Duties
The Engineering Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of engineering equipment in support of Transportation Branch operations.
In this position, you will:
* Operate heavy equipment in conjunction with the construction, maintenance and repair operations; digs trenches for water, sewer, electric and gas lines.
* Perform grading inside and outside of the building using track steer, skid steer and front loader.
* Operate equipment close to buildings, trees, drop-offs, rocks, etc.
* Adjust attachments to equipment generally without stopping power units, this machinery includes, but is not limited to, forklifts, wheeled tractors (up to 3,000 pounds draw pull capacity), truck cranes (motor driven 6,000 pounds), backhoe, power sweepers, two-ton road rollers, front end loaders, bobcat, automotive vehicles (1/4 to 8 tons), etc.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.
Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside with the majority of work being performed outside. When working outside, worker is frequently exposed to inclement weather. Incumbent works in rain, mud, snow, and in hot/cold temperatures. The operator is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, fumes, oils, solvents and cold and dampness. Worker is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.

Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.
Typical Functions
Operates equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front- end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
Repairs failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.

Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.

Level Descriptor

**Responsibilities:**
+ Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers and motor graders
+ Perform general maintenance including greasing, checking fluid levels, and cleaning of tracks
+ Daily cleaning of equipment
+ Report deficiencies to foreman immediately
+ Must be willing to perform manual labor related tasks to support projects
