Suffolk Design, a fully integrated architectural and engineering services vertical within Suffolk Construction, aims to leverage Suffolk's core construction capabilities along with innovative technologies to create a disruptive digital design and engineering platform capable of delivering construction-ready design with unprecedented levels of speed, accuracy, and technical competence. To that end, Suffolk Design is seeking an Assistant Design Manager to join its growing practice.
The Role
Suffolk's vision is to integrate the entire building lifecycle into a seamless platform to redefine how the world builds. A key component of delivering on that vision has been the development of Suffolk Design-an innovative vertical offering fully-integrated design and design management services. Leveraging Suffolk's core construction capabilities, technologies, and processes, Suffolk Design aims to reimagine traditional design delivery processes through specialized service offerings, fully integrated with Suffolk's core construction capabilities.
Responsibilities
Represent Suffolk to clients and the broader industry on all topics related to Structural Engineering as a Subject Matter expert.
Provide technical support and guidance to project and construction teams throughout the lifecycle of the project across Suffolk's national footprint.
Collaborate with project consulting engineers and Structural subcontractors to arrive at optimized project solutions, conformant with cost and scheduling objectives, including consideration of procurement and supply-chain issues.
Analyze structural components and systems for various types of buildings. Evaluate Structural system designs for completeness, constructability, efficiency, and conformance with cost/schedule goals across Suffolk's national portfolio of projects.
Assessment, selection, and management of Structural Engineer(s) of Record and Structural Subcontractors on Design-Build contracts.
Stay up-to-date with industry trends, technologies, and best practices in structural engineering.
Support Suffolk Design's design technology staff in the introduction of automated design and documentation processes and workflows.
Act as advocate for Suffolk Design in professional circles including regular participation in industry events, marketing efforts, etc.
While Professional Engineering Services are not planned as a Suffolk Design offering, provide support for:
Preparation of detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and reports.
Performance of structural calculations and simulations to ensure the safety and stability of structures.
Conduct site visits to monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with design specifications and building codes.
In collaboration with Suffolk Design leadership and the project team, analyze, refine, and test design-construction workflow assumptions in real-time to optimize Suffolk Design's process moving forward.
Maintain and support client relationships during all project phases, ensuring a client-first mentality that encourages both active engagement in and ownership of all design decisions.
Use computer-aided design software to create 2D and 3D models.
Collaborate with Suffolk Design and Suffolk leadership to develop project proposals.
Serve as Structural systems lead in Suffolk Design proposal and interviews.
Leverage existing network to identify/pursue new opportunities for Suffolk Design.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering (Master's degree preferred).
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
Minimum of 12 years of experience in structural engineering.
Experience with design-build project delivery.
Proficiency in structural analysis and design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, ETABS).
Strong knowledge of building codes, standards, and regulations.
Proven success working on multiple projects concurrently and across all project phases including Construction Documentation and Construction Administration.
Proven success working on projects of varying size (min. $10M+ construction value) and market sectors (multi-family, office, healthcare, institutional, etc.).
