POSITION OVERVIEW:
Diamond Foods is looking for an experienced, energetic Maintenance / Engineering manager to join the Operations team in Stockton, California. The Maintenance / Engineering manager will be accountable for asset reliability maintenance program management, food safety, environmental sustainability and leading skilled work team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintenance / Reliability management using CMMS for preventative maintenance, PM and predictive maintenance program, planning, scheduling, parts and work order system management
Work with production managers, corporate staff, consultants to continually evaluate, develop, and execute projects that improve safety, reduce costs and improve quality
Execute projects to include funding (AFEs), defining scope, conducting cost analysis and justification, and project management
Develop skills of engineering/ maintenance staff and perform annual performance evaluations
5. Lead and develop associates, supervisors, and work teams through training and coaching
6. Ensure training for newly implemented methods, equipment, and systems to continuously improve technical skill level
7. Manage capital, labor, parts, contracted services, and expense budgets
Manage cross-functional teams of resources in Engineering/Maintenance, Production, Procurement, and Marketing to identify and implement improvement opportunities and achieve KPI's
9. Provide engineering analysis using procedures that include generation of drawings, engineering design principles, process capabilities, and equipment layouts
Ensure that the equipment is capable of making product to specification at a rate to achieve production schedule, targeted efficiencies and operate at design specifications
Support daily operational troubleshooting and problem solving
Support and lead environmental and energy conservation program
Implement and share best practices
Ensure a safe working environment for team associates
Lead sanitation team
WORK EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in engineering field
· Ability to work flexible hours / shifts to manage and support 3 shift operation
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience leading, developing engineering and maintenance team / department
· 3 - 7 years experience in leading and developing a technical team: industrial mechanics, engineering and maintenance supervisors, and or technical team, preferred
· Has potential to grow into an engineering director level role within 3 - 5 years
· Has demonstrated ability to implement and sustain manufacturing process improvements and controls, preferred
· Experience with CMMS systems, and asset reliability management
· Experience with industrial electrical safety, and fundamental knowledge of industrial controls and electrical systems, and mechanical systems, preferred but not required
· Experience with high speed packaging technology, operations and maintenance

THE ROLE
The Director of Engineering will take on a leadership role within a small but expanding engineering team (currently 10 members). As the current engineering lead transitions into a CTO role, this position will be responsible for overseeing team growth, driving technical strategy, and ensuring scalable development practices.
While primarily a leadership role, this position will involve some hands-on work (approximately 10 percent of the time). The ideal candidate has experience managing small teams and scaling them into larger, high-performing organizations.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and mentor a growing engineering team, establishing best practices and fostering a collaborative culture.
Define and execute technical strategies to support company expansion.
Maintain a hands-on approach when necessary to guide development efforts.
Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data science and product, to build scalable solutions.
Develop and implement systems to enhance the company's genetic data platform.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Must-Have:
Proven experience in an engineering leadership role, ideally at the director level.
Strong background in Python development.
At least 8 years of industry experience, with a preference for candidates from biotech, genomics, or other scientific fields.
Experience leading small engineering teams and scaling them as the company grows.
Nice-to-Have:
Background in genetic testing or related industries.
Experience working across multiple organizations, bringing diverse engineering perspectives.
Familiarity with frontend technologies, even if primarily focused on backend development.
