JOB SUMMARY: The Technician is responsible for diagnosing, performing and documenting all levels of equipment repairs to commercial motor vehicles.

Interpersonal Responsibilities

Operational Responsibilities
Reviews Work Orders and all relevant background information that provides context on the customers situation and the repairs that are needed. Verifies location of the customers truck and keys, unit number and work assignment with the Service Manager.
Communicates with Service Assistant to obtain or order parts needed to complete jobs. Ensures all unused parts are returned to the Service Manager for placement back into the company's inventory.
Research applicable vehicle and service information, such as engine management system operation, vehicle service history, service precautions, technical service bulletins, and service campaigns/recalls.
Reports all discrepancies between the Work Order and the actual work needed to be performed and requests guidance from Service Manager on how to proceed with the job. In instances when unforeseen issues are discovered that are outside the scope of the Work Order, consults with the Service Manager before continuing with the repair to ensure all work performed stays within the quote guidelines.
Inspects final repairs with the Service Manager to verify that all work is completed to the Job Order specifications. After job close out, ensures the vehicle is cleaned and the customers instructions for vehicle delivery, key placement and other special requests are followed.
Properly clocks on and clocks off of jobs; writes clear, accurate, detailed descriptions of the operations performed, records all parts used on the job, and completes all required paperwork such as inspection sheets, Federal inspection papers, and fault code print outs.
Troubleshoots, tests and diagnoses various truck engines including drive train, steering and suspension, brake HVAC, and electrical, systems; identifies needed repairs and determines corrective action. Performs maintenance and repairs requiring entry, intermediate, advanced and master skill levels. Representative functions include:
Entry level (Technician 1): Preventative maintenance, greasing and lubrication, oil changes, balancing and mounting tires, suspension work and routine repairs.
Intermediate Level (Technician 2): Engine tune ups, clutch repairs and basic electrical and wheel end repairs.
Advanced Level (Technician 3): Engine and Transmission rebuilds; minor computer and mechanical diagnostics.
Master Level (Technician 4): Advanced mechanical emissions, electronic and computer diagnostics.
Performs roadside service calls; consults with Service Manager to determine the parts needed, reviews situation with the customer, troubleshoots issues and performs repairs. Contacts Service Manager or Service Assistant to confirm job completion and provides time allocation and other required information to properly bill the job. In situations when roadside repairs cannot not be completed, contacts Service Manager to arrange for customer pick up and tow.
Performs federal inspection on customer vehicles; follows safety inspection checklists, notes any out of compliance issues and notifies Service Manager of inspection results.
Communicates with the Service Manager to verify authorized repairs for warranty work; may contact OEM Technical Support for authorization and/or assistance with determining the repairs needed. Completes all authorized repairs and stages parts for return to OEM as needed. Visually documents repairs and completes electronic service reports for submittal to the OEM. Accurately records completed repairs on work orders, noting any exceptions.
Maintains toolbox, work area and service truck in an organized and clean manner.
Completes required online and classroom instruction to maintain certifications on OEM systems.
