$20/hour - no benefits Job Description: Under the supervision of the Chief of Police and the Chief of the Fire Department, the Emergency Communication Dispatcher receives emergency and non-emergency calls, advises callers, and dispatches public safety personnel and/or emergency units to specific locations as necessary. The Emergency Communication Dispatcher maintains records of emergency calls and events and performs related duties necessary for the effective operation of the Public Safety Communications Center. This position is a part-time (up to 19 hours per week), non-union affiliated position. General Responsibilities: Receives emergency and non-emergency calls, advise callers, and dispatches emergency units to specific locations if necessary. Operates the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system. Accesses public safety databases (e.g. NCIC, BCI, MVD) for agency-related inquiries and notices. Provides verbal information to public safety officers. Redirects non-emergency incoming telephone calls to the appropriate public safety department. Provide print information to public safety personnel of outside agencies (FAX, TTY Message, reports, etc.) when appropriate. Maintains records of all incoming calls and public safety actions. Monitors hold-up and burglar alarms. Monitors fire department municipal box alarm systems. Records and communicates information related to citizen concerns and complaints. Communicates with support services (e.g. tow service, other police agencies) when necessary. Files, manages, and confirms existing arrest warrants, files, and records related to the existence of arrest warrants. Provides written reports concerning criminal activity or personal knowledge related to criminal cases or investigations. Follows and maintains department and position-related standards. Related duties as required. Desirable Abilities, Knowledge, Training, and Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills (Spanish and Portuguese preferred). Strong public service/customer service skills. Ability to understand and effectively transmit oral instructions. Knowledge of services, practices, and techniques of public safety departments (Police, Fire, Rescue). Ability to remain calm under emergency and stressful conditions. Ability to act decisively in emergency situations. Ability to multi-task. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with fellow employees and supervisors. Ability to organize and maintain departmental records and reports. Ability to follow prescribed rules and regulations. Knowledge of the geographical areas of the city and the ability to learn the street directory and neighborhood characteristics. Ability to use complex computer systems and related technology. Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. Two years' experience in customer service, public safety, or a related field. Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to operate public safety computer systems. Ability to respond as needed to emergency situations. Ability to work irregular hours. Ability to work with limited or restricted break times. The Department of State Police is seeking a Public Safety Dispatcher I at our New Braintree facility. Duties include: * Receives, reviews, and transmits emergency and law enforcement related communications by operating multi-band sophisticated radio broadcast system, teleprocessing system, cellular emergency 911 telephone network and a worldwide police telecommunications system under the rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission to disseminate information on crimes and emergencies. * Coordinates the communications activities of National Attack Warning Systems, in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the event of a public emergency such as nuclear detonation or natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods. * Answer complaints and transmits broadcast orders to coordinate the dispatching of law enforcement and other emergency personnel. * Receives emergency and law enforcement related communications from the public via various communications devices, including emergency cellular 911 and enhanced 911 network and provides assistance as needed. * Provides information via communications systems to coordinate the activities of law enforcement personnel who are engaged in major law enforcement actions such as highspeed chases, surveillance, searches, restraining orders, search warrants etc. * Provides information via communications systems to coordinate the activities of emergency personnel who are engaged in major emergency actions such as natural disasters, medical, fires, domestic abuse, emergency medical, psychological commitments, etc. * Utilizes numerous federal, state, municipal law enforcement and emergency communication systems for the purpose of receiving, evaluating, and forwarding information to other federal, state, municipal and international law enforcement and emergency agencies. * Responds to requests for information from worldwide law enforcement agencies relative to missing or wanted individuals, criminal histories, stolen property, sensitive intelligence such as drug interdiction and terrorist activities, stolen property, etc. * Receives and reviews requests and coordinates the emergency transport of human blood and/or organs to and various medical facilities throughout the Commonwealth and/or nationwide, as required. * Responds to requests for information via telephone, from other agencies, the news media and the general public to provide both law enforcement-oriented and general information concerning weather conditions, road conditions and travel directions. * Maintain records of radio transmissions and teleprocessing systems received and/or transmitted and maintain files of such records. * Maintains and operates and emergency TDY system for the hearing-impaired public. * Facilitates a language line system for the non-English speaking public; performs related duties as required.
