Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this position exists is to receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public to the Montgomery Emergency Communications Center (ECC) using a highly specialized computer telephony system and software application and enter data received into a computerized dispatch system to assist dispatcher(s) with emergency response. The work responsibilities include processing emergencies; initiating and performing Emergency Medical Dispatch; query, enter and receive critical law enforcement information using local, state, and national level database systems and performing department administrative/clerical duties. ECOIs report directly to a Public Safety Communications Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. Applicants must have completed a data entry operations course at a technical institute or six (6) months of experience as a data entry operator, telephone operator, or a receptionist type position receiving and/or transmitting telephone, radio, or alarm system calls.
NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
As a condition of continued employment, you must pass a background check and drug test. Must be willing to respond to the Emergency Communications Center when requested for man-made and natural disasters that could include working irregular hours, weekends, holidays, and evenings. YOUR ROLE
Are you known for your coordination skills? Are you passionate about safety and regulation compliance? If so, we have an opportunity that would allow you to manage driver route assignments, ensuring compliance with DOT regulations and established internal policies and guidelines.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?
* Develop and provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
* Dispatch drivers for U.S. domestic shipment pick-ups and deliveries. Ensure compliance with DOT regulations and established internal policies and guidelines.
* Notify drivers of assignments and direct their activities to ensure cargo is picked up and delivered according to time-sensitive schedules.
* Maintain information on shipments under Customs control and ensure paperwork required for the release of the cargo is given to proper station import personnel.
* Manage stored data and enter new data in computer database.
* Assist with shrink-wrapping, loading and downloading freight, verifying the labeling of domestic shipments, and noting the count and condition of cargo received.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
* Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED; Minimum one to three years related experience. Minimum one year of industry experience preferred. Knowledge of local geographic market.
* Credentials: Valid state issued Class C Driver's License. Forklift Certification. DOT Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Materials Certification. Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Ability to drive and/or operate heaving machinery or equipment.

Summary/Objective
The part-time Control Room Dispatcher is an operations positions with primary responsibilities for general safety and security services, monitoring and operating various means of security video monitoring systems, two-way radio transmissions, etc., to ensure that misuse, damage, or theft of BJCC property does not occur at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center, and related properties. This position may have a moderate to extensive stress level associated with responding to emergency situations, dealing with the public, and prioritizing responses. The environment is mainly indoors, usually working in a communication center environment.

Position requires calm and professional response in a crisis or stressful situation. Must have the ability to hear and communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. Duties require extended periods of sitting. Limited amount of physical effort such as walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 30lbs with or without assistance, while maintaining good balance. Must be flexible enough to reach above shoulder level and be able to push and pull for brief periods of time.
