The School Resource Officer (SRO) position is responsible for the prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution of criminal violations that happen on Portsmouth Public City School property or events. The SRO position works on a fixed schedule. The SRO position also requires work outside the normal schedule to complete the mission. This includes but is not limited to dances, athletic events, and shift extensions.


Duties:
As sworn law enforcement officers, the SRO will assume a leadership role in law enforcement and public safety matters in schools. The law enforcement role can be effective when the officer is assigned to a school:

Assumes primary responsibility for handling all calls for service from the school and coordinates the response of other police resources to the school.

Serves as a liaison between the school and the police and provides information to students and school personnel about law enforcement matters.

Is advised of all situations where other units within the law enforcement agency have provided services to the school.
Provides information to the appropriate investigative units of crimes or leads that come to the attention of the officer.
Is kept advised of all investigations by other units that involve students from his/her assigned school.
Ensures school administrator safety by being present during incidents that may involve weapons, controlled dangerous substances or in such cases that the student's emotional state may present a serious risk to the administrator.
Adhere to the guidelines of the MOU with Portsmouth Public Schools.


Preferred Skills and Abilities:
Candidates must possess an avid interest in being a School Resource Officer and should possess the following in order to be successful:

Certified as a School Resource Officer
A demonstrated ability, interest, and skills necessary to work with youth, school personnel, and the public to solve problems.
A desire to serve as an SRO based on a sound understanding of roles and responsibilities associated with the assignment
Ability to work well with children and youth either as a law enforcement officer or in other substantive roles (e.g., volunteer work, coaching, church youth activities)
Character traits known to be associated with SRO success (e.g., calm, approachable, patient, empathetic, flexible, mature, able to work with people from diverse populations)
Evidence of dependability, sound judgement, and ability to work hard and independently
Ability to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and school administrators
An understanding of the importance of diversion programs and alternatives to arrest
Respect for youth and families of all backgrounds and cultures
An understanding of developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed practices for interacting with youth
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Strong public speaking ability
Effective law-related teaching and mentoring skills
An interest in promoting and enriching the lives of youth
Knowledge of the specific needs and local concerns of the community

  • U.S. citizen or in the process of and qualified for U.S. citizenship.
  • At least 21 years of age at hire.
  • Valid United States (state) Operator’s (driver’s) license
  • High School Diploma and completion or GED equivalent.
  • Non-user of any tobacco product (including Vape)
  • 20/20 corrected vision. Near/night vision, Color blindness, peripheral test clearance.
  • Excellent physical condition and acceptable physical medical examination.
  • Tattoos not displayed while on duty and facial hair limited to moustache trimmed at corners of mouth.
  • Veteran hiring preference applies.
Disqualifying Factors
  • The Sheriff’s Office may reject any applicant for any arrest, plea or conviction that occurred at any age for any offense including misdemeanors.
  • Conviction, plea of guilty or no contest/Alford to a felony or any offense if committed in Virginia would be deemed a felony.
  • Class 1 or 2 misdemeanor committed as an adult to include DUI.
  • Positive result on any pre-employment drug screen.
  • More than one moving traffic violation within 12 months or two moving traffic violations within 24 months of the date of application.
Hours

This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Salary & Benefits

The starting salary for qualified Deputy Sheriffs is $51,707, but subject to increases depending on experience and qualifications. * Attends and obtains Certification by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) academy to learn the principles, methods and techniques employed by the Deputy Sheriff class
* Attends indoor and outdoor classes and training sessions for preparation as a Deputy Sheriff

Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving; working with and around other public officials, citizens and staff; dealing with interruptions; writing, writing weapons qualifications, telephones, etc. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, hazards including mechanical, burns, electrical, explosives, chemicals, heights and others and exposure to adverse atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases and others.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a U.S. citizen (Ariz. Admin. Code § R13-04-105(A)(1) (2016), 21 years of age at the time of appointment, high school graduate (or G.E.D.).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must obtain certification from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) within one year of employment with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. Must pass AZPOST prescribed physical agility test. Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must submit to a background search and successfully pass a physical, and polygraph examination prior to employment.

The ideal candidatewill have knowledge of the local areas; previous law enforcement and/or military experience.
