The Dental Program works with many community partners, targeting underserved populations in Multnomah County to ensure access to dental services including providing education, prevention and dental treatment.
As a On Call Dentist, other duties will include:
Clinic Skills
Perform professional dental and oral surgical services for patients at a County dental clinic; examine, diagnose and treat abnormalities, injuries and dysfunctional disorders of the oral cavity and its associated structures; examine patients and interpret radiographs and diagnostic tests to determine the type and extent of dental disease and disorders; review and evaluate medical histories and precautions for dental treatment; review oral habits, diet and nutrition; perform routine preventative, periodontal, oral surgery, endodontic and prosthodontic treatment; restore various tooth lesions with appropriate filling materials; restore health of carious and fractured teeth; extract non restorable teeth; provide counseling of oral disease control methods.
Treat infections and diseases of the oral cavity; prescribe appropriate medication; administer anesthesia; examine for, prepare, and fit prosthetic appliances; perform cancer screening. Provide triage and treatment of patients requiring emergency dental care, including treatment for patients in acute pain and oral surgery as necessary; treat post-operative complications; refer complex cases when necessary; refer non-dental problems to appropriate medical specialty; evaluate and detect medical conditions for referral to primary care provider.
Perform complex dental treatment; manage patients with anxious behavior; Provides complete chart documentation and has acceptable results on chart audits.

Instruct staff in the maintenance of accurate dental examination and treatment records; participate in staff conferences to review and improve the clinic and County dental care program); assist in the development of policies and procedures involved in the operation of a dental clinic ; assist in the supervision of dental clinic staff. Provide Indirect supervision, assist and guide dental assistants, dental students (provided preceptorship designation has been granted), and other staff in technical work of the clinic; give instruction in the prevention and control of oral disease.

Oversee and control strict asepsis controls to prevent transmission of communicable diseases; maintain strict control over the dispensing and use of toxic materials.
