The participant will gain experience with a highly dedicated and accomplished team of data analysts and data system managers, as well as with EPA managers and a variety of data analysis and data system customers. This includes interacting with others through the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators and various EPA working groups.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
Qualifications
Applicants must have received a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, engineering, public policy, physical sciences, computer science, within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.
The appointments are full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participants will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend will range from $44,941 to $54,972 based on educational level. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participants' travel expenses to present the results of their research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or health insurance. The participants must show proof of health and medical insurance.
The participants do not become EPA employees.

Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Manager of Data Analytics, Director and the Vice President of Hub Operations, the Data Analyst Intern will be responsible for conducting analysis, trending and data mining large sets of data, conducting research, developing data models, data cleansing and blending, data visualization with Tableau, and producing summaries of their analytic findings for management, clients and other team members. The Analyst must demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills, have a team orientation, an adaptable nature and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationship.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interpret data, analyze results using statistical techniques and provide ongoing reports
Develop and implement data collection systems and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and data quality
Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets
Filter and “clean” data, and review computer reports, printouts, and performance indicators to locate and correct code problems
Work closely with management to prioritize business and information needs
Locate and define new process improvement opportunities
Document and maintain business and functional requirements and ensure persistency
Communicate with clients and stakeholders using data to clearly describe a problem or solution
Utilize time management skills and multi-tasking capabilities to handle multiple and parallel projects, deliverables while working both independently and collaboratively within a team.
Maintain user confidence and protect the business by keeping information confidential.
Occasional travel may be required Qualifications
Requirements & Minimum Skills:
Must be enrolled in an accredited university/college.
Excellent communication (written, oral, interpersonal) and grammar skills.
Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Duration: June 2, 2025 - July 26, 2025 (8-10 weeks)
20-30 hours/week
Pay: $18 p/hr
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in math, economics, computer science, engineering or management information systems with 1-3 years of experience as an analyst or experience with data management and analytical software tools.
Proven working experience as a data analyst
Technical expertise regarding data models, database design development, data mining and segmentation techniques
Previous data analysis experience and report design using Tableau or similar tool is required.
MINIMUM SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Adept at writing complex queries using SQL, report writing/building and presenting findings.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
Experience using Business Intelligence (BI)/statistical packages for analyzing large datasets (Excel, SPSS, SAS Tableau, etc.)
SQL-Server experience
Demonstrated experience in all phases of data analytics
Ability to participate in discussing program data and analysis (attend client meetings to brainstorm and problem-solve on their data needs and questions)
Write logical, comprehensive, concise reports, meeting minutes, correspondence; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Well-organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks at once in order to meet demanding deadlines.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Word)
Proficient in Microsoft Visio, Project and Sharepoint.
Demonstrate Creative problem-solving skills, ability to maintain the highest levels of customer satisfaction and a service orientation.
Preferred Skills
Experience working in a fast-paced startup atmosphere
Experience working with and presenting to executive level clients and managers
Experience working with large data sets, producing and clearly explaining reports to the end user
Experience in the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device or Healthcare industry
