The Probation Department conducts pre-sentence investigations, prepares pre-sentence reports, and makes placement recommendations for juveniles and adults accused of felonies. Following sentencing, the department monitors all individuals given terms of probation. The major divisions and "core" functions of the department are adult and juvenile intake, and adult and juvenile supervision.
The Shasta County Juvenile Rehabilitation Facility (JRF) is a 24-hour secure detention facility administered by the Probation Department. The JRF is responsible for the care, custody, and control of youth and transitional aged youth up to twenty-five years of age. Our mission is accomplished by ensuring staff serve as role models and project an appearance, attitude and behavior which creates an atmosphere conducive to positive change, and by working closely with our community partners to deliver research driven programs targeting the individual needs of our population.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under minimum supervision, to accept, process and type legal documents; to perform a variety of complex and specialized clerical duties associated with law enforcement; to act as lead worker, training and assisting in supervising new personnel; and to perform related work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from Legal Process Clerk II by having specialized clerical and lead duties. An incumbent in this class provides leadership and direction to support staff working swing or graveyard shifts, assisting with supervision while the direct supervisor works the day shift.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs routine and advanced clerical tasks involving typing, filing, record keeping, and related duties in automated legal office environment; responds to requests by the general public and staff for information; researches, extracts, transfers and summarizes information from arrest records and crime reports, and various other records; checks reports, records and files for accuracy, completeness and compliance with mandates of the law and established standards; checks and tabulates data; monitors fingerprint quality, accuracy of charges and performs quality control in this field; receives money in payment of copies, fingerprinting services, licenses, permits and mandated services; writes receipts and keeps records of collections; follows up on letters and materials sent to other divisions for review or completion; maintains a variety of personnel files and information for the unit; operates a variety of office equipment, including microfilm-microfiche, copiers/printers, electronic typewriters, computer terminals, and other automated devices; maintains repair logs on all equipment, as well as being the contact person for maintenance and repairs on all office equipment; operates a multiple level console telephone; answers for all divisions during off hours; responsible for approving schedule changes and time cards; assigns and reviews the work of support staff; participates in evaluations of clerical staff; actively trains and monitors work performance of new employees in training; acts as liaison between the supervisor working a different shift and unit staff; and performs a broad spectrum of related and responsible duties. Depending on assignment, may have responsibility for updating manuals (LETS, etc.), statistics, training, and quality control of data entry; and making decisions in procedural matters, lawful right-to-know and need-to-know situations involving release of records information.
