Bureau/Division Overview
Tax Administration is responsible for fostering voluntary compliance and narrowing the tax gap by identifying, educating, and auditing noncompliant taxpayers. The Tax Administration Division audits the tax returns of businesses and individuals filed, including sales/use, meals, rooms occupancy and special fuels, are subject to examination by the Tax Administration Division staff.
The Data Analytics Group is responsible for audit selection and analysis utilizing DOR's data warehouse.
Position Summary
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue is seeking interns to work with the Data Analytics Unit. We are looking for someone to assist with developing new data-driven analytics initiatives that seek to improve operational performance in any of the core functions of the Tax Division. This role is not just about data, it is also about understanding the complex interplay between technology and business operations. We need someone who not only has strong analytical and technical skills but also, equally as important, can spot untapped potential in DOR's rich data assets and help us better realize this potential.
Core Responsibilities
•Communicating with business stakeholders to understand objectives or problems that would benefit from data analysis
•Conduct advanced data mining, statistical analysis, and research activities
•Researching Massachusetts tax procedures, processing systems; learning the meaning, lineage, and limitations of relevant data
•Collaborating with senior analysts to formulate a plan for analysis
•Using SQL, Python, or other programming languages to clean and prepare data for analysis.

•Strong analytical skills.
•Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Bureau/Division Overview
The Division of Local Services (DLS) within the DOR is dedicated to promoting sound municipal finance management practices and supporting local officials by providing guidance, training, and oversight in various aspects of local governance, taxation, and financial management. The Data Analytics and Resources Bureau (DARB) is responsible for collecting, managing and distributing data. DARB maintains the Division's website, provides user support and software development services for DLS Gateway, and provides training, support, and consulting services to local government in collaboration with the Division's other bureaus. It develops and publishes Databank reports and visualizations based on financial, demographic and other data related to local government.
Position Summary
Join us as a Summer Data Analyst and embark on a dynamic journey within the Data Analytics and Resources Bureau (DARB). This role supports our team of report and visualization developers. It is an opportunity to be a key player in our effort to organize, document and present information.
Core Responsibilities
Support development of reports, datasets, visualizations, and other data publications.
Support gathering requirements, preparing and verifying data, designing, developing, conducting QA, recognizing problems/risks, publishing, and maintaining them to meet stakeholder needs.
Support documentation of reports and visualizations according to bureau guidelines.
Collaborate closely with our seasoned team of report and visualization developers.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Tableau, Power BI, Logi Analytics, or Google Looker.
Experience with JIRA and Confluence.
Knowledge of SQL for data querying and manipulation.
Strong organizational skills and a sharp eye for detail.
Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
Ability to thrive in both collaborative team settings and independent work.
An open mindset and willingness to learn new tools and techniques.

This Summer Internship project will be focused on developing machine learning models for automated analysis of scientific microscopy images, including crystallization monitoring, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM). The project aims to create an integrated solution that automates data collection and analysis from microscope images, enabling more efficient research workflows and quantitative analysis of visual data.
This role will work closely with various departments within Veranova, including the engineering team, laboratory scientists familiar with microscopy techniques, engineers for microscope integration, and IT support.
Key Objectives:
Develop ML models to automatically identify and classify features in crystallization, SEM, and PLM images
Create an automated data collection pipeline integrated with microscope hardware
Implement image enhancement and preprocessing techniques specific to scientific microscopy
Design quantitative analysis tools for morphology, size distribution, and growth kinetics
Build a user-friendly interface for researchers to interact with the system
Qualifications:
Working towards a BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related field
Minimum Overall GPA of 2.7 required
Strong programming skills in Python
Experience with computer vision and image processing libraries (OpenCV, scikit-image)
Familiarity with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow)
Basic understanding of microscopy techniques (preferred)
Hardware interfacing experience (preferred)
Web or desktop application development experience
Demonstrated leadership skills with a true career aspiration to be a leader
