About The Custodial Relief Program
The Recreation and Park Department's Custodial Relief Program is a pool of on-call custodians who will temporarily fill in throughout the department's citywide facilities in cases of vacation, illness and other leaves. Employees in this program may work on average between 12 - 16 hours per week, and are expected to maintain availability from 4:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m. for at least four (4) consecutive days in the week to meet the needs of the department.
Job Description
Under supervision, employees in the Custodial Relief Program will be responsible for:
1. Performing routine cleaning tasks;
2. Maintaining interiors of buildings, other facilities and surrounding areas;
3. Maintaining recreational areas, locker rooms and specific exterior areas of buildings such as parking areas, ramps and sidewalks;
4. Operating scrubbers, buffers, wax applicators, burnishers, carpet extractors, pressure washers and other electrical, gas and manual operated appliances and equipment (e.g., leaf blowers);
5. Removing disposable waste materials from premises;
6. Washing interior glass, wall partitions and interior and exterior windows;
7. Caring for custodian tools, equipment and supplies;
8. Securing buildings as required;
9. Driving large vans (e.g. 12-person) and trucks in a safe manner; and
10. Performing other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Experience
1. Six (6) months (1040 hours) verifiable paid full-time custodial or janitorial experience at a commercial building (such as an office building, warehouse, retail or wholesale store, or non-profit agency or a commercial facility (such as a university, hospital stadium, auditorium, hotel/motel, etc.); OR
2. Certificate of completion of a Custodial Training Program equivalent to those certified by the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Agency; OR
3. Verification of current enrollment in a custodial training course equivalent to those certified by the City and County of San Francisco Human Services Agency at the time of application. Candidates who are enrolled in a custodial training course at the time of application must submit verification of having completed the course (e.g., a copy of their certificate), prior to appointment. Candidates will remain under waiver until such time that verification is provided

Employees in the Custodial Relief Program must:
Maintain availability between 4:00 am - 10:30 pm for at least four (4) consecutive days every week to meet the operational needs of the department; and

Are willing and able to work alone in the dark during the early morning and late at night during a work shift.

Position Summary
Under direct supervision, it is the primary responsibility of the Custodian to clean and sanitize assigned areas, including both public and private locations of the properties managed by Housing, Dining & Conference Services. The Custodian, reporting to the Custodial Supervisor, performs essential custodial and light maintenance tasks across various County facilities. Responsibilities include comprehensive cleaning duties such as waste removal from offices, thorough cleaning and disinfection of restrooms with replenishment of supplies, and maintenance of partitions, walls, and trash containers. Floor care involves sweeping, scrubbing, removal of gum and graffiti, and dusting. Additionally, the Custodian sets up tables and chairs, manages furniture moves, and removes old fixtures. Security checks of buildings are also a core function. The role requires the monitoring, cleaning, and light repair of custodial equipment like floor buffers, vacuums, and extractors. This position requires shift work, including nights and weekends, adherence to a County-issued uniform policy, and potential work within locked or secured facilities. Basic computer skills are essential for completing County forms and utilizing relevant systems.
ABOUT YOU
As our Highly Qualified Candidate you are proficient in all aspects of custodial services, and experienced in the practices, procedures, and tools associated with custodial maintenance tasks. You have experience with high and low speed floor buffers, extractors and vacuums is highly desirable.
You are able to exercise sound, independent judgment, are detail oriented, and flexible with scheduled routes. As the ideal candidate you are able to work independently with little supervision, have personal and professional integrity and possesses initiative. You also have have excellent oral communication and organizational skills.

The Position
This is manual labor work at the action level involved in a variety of assignments related to the cleaning and general maintenance of community college facilities. Under direct supervision, the Custodian performs moderate to heavy manual labor, which includes the cleaning of college facilities, moving of equipment and furniture, locking doors and other entrances and reporting unusual events to management and Public Safety personnel as appropriate. Public contact is moderate to extensive, primarily involving staff and students for the purpose of exchanging procedural information concerning cleaning needs and facility set-ups. A limited to moderate degree of independent judgment and creativity are required to perform routine cleaning and general maintenance assignments that are well prescribed. Consequences of errors in judgment could be costly in materials and employee time; however, supervisory controls limit the risk of serious consequences. A Custodian can be assigned individually or as part of a work team to various sites and can direct the work of student assistants or temporary staff as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including but not limited to:
Follow specific instructions, established procedures, written orders and plans subject to inspection of work during and upon completion. Responsible for completing work assignments properly an in accordance with specified time limits as directed by your supervisor.
