Job Description
Responsibilities Include:
* Completes detailed cleaning including disinfecting surface areas; dusts, mops, sweeps, and autoscrubs floors; completes spot cleaning of carpets and flooring; washes windows, fixtures, floors and walls; dusts furniture, lockers, cabinets, walls, window sills, radiators, and other furnishings; dusts and washes blinds; empties trash receptacles.
* Cleans and sanitizes toilets, urinals, sinks, hand dryers, and other surfaces; restocks inventory; assists in recycling efforts; responds to customer requests; prioritizes tasks based on supervisors' guidance.
* Completes paperwork, timesheets and equipment logs using computerized system.
Job Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. One (1) year of related experience may substitute for education. Must pass a thorough criminal history screening and have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

TITLE: Custodian
SALARY: $10.50-$15.50/hour (wage determined by years of relevant experience)
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 6 hours/day, 12 months/year (benefits-eligible)
REPORTS TO: Building Principal, Maintenance Supervisor, and/or Head Custodian
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal and Assistant Director of Operations
JOB GOAL: To provide all students with a physical learning environment that is safe, clean, attractive, pleasant, and smooth-functioning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times.
2. Shovel, plow, and/or sand walks and steps as appropriate.
3. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are unlocked and all panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
4. Raise the United States and Kansas flag at or before 8:00am on each school day, and lower it at or after 3:30pm.
5. Clean classrooms daily and dust furniture and woodwork.
6. Clean corridors after school each day, and/or during the day when their condition requires it.
7. Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilet floors daily and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
8. Wash all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary.
9. Keep the grounds free from rubbish.
10. Perform such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, etc. to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
11. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
12. Clean all whiteboards at least once a week.
14. Make minor building repairs.
15. Report major repair needs correctly and in an accurate and timely manner.
16. Maintain, on a regular schedule, all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
17. Report any damage and/or vandalism to school property immediately to the principal.
18. Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the principal.
19. Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, security systems activated, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. (This duty may be delegated)
20. Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment, and requisition needed replacements far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian.
21. Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair, including replacement of bulbs, tubes, filters, etc.
22. Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
23. Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste while wearing necessary personal safety equipment.
23. Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition.
24. Cooperate with city and state inspectors involved in health, fire, and safety.
25. Perform routine janitorial duties as required.
26. Attendance is required.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school graduate, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
2. Good knowledge of maintenance methods, materials and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently.
3. Ability to understand and follow simple verbal and written directions.
4. Extensive janitorial experience, some of which shall have been at the level of the position.
5. Some experience as a semi-skilled handyman.
6. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Standing / walking up to 6 to 8 hours in an 8-hour workday.

3. Lifting boxes of supplies weighing up to 50 lb. from the floor to waist height at a frequency of occasional (6-33%) level for an 8-hour workday.
4. Lifting of trash containers from waist weight to 4-1/2 feet high, that weigh 60 lb. This task is at an occasional level for an 8-hour workday.
5. Moving classroom furniture out of the rooms for cleaning. Furniture that can weigh up to 100 lb. that does require a 2-man lift. This task is at a rare (1-5%) frequency of an 8-hour workday.

Required knowledge and skills
A. Neat in personal appearance.
B. Must possess a valid Kansas driver's license.
C. Able to lift 50 pounds without limitations.
D. Able to climb, stoop, bend and work in awkward positions.
E. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and work independently from direct supervision.
F. Must have knowledge of basic computer fundamentals.
G. Must be able to drive college vehicles, including large vans and trucks.
H. Must show pride in workmanship.
I. Maintain good working relationship with college/community persons and trades.
J. Must be able to work overtime and weekends for emergencies or events.
K. Flexible in working hours and able to adapt to unscheduled activities.
L. Must be able to work split shifts and late hours, if needed.
M. Must be in general good physical health.
Required experience
Must have practical knowledge of custodial duties and associated equipment and cleaning solvents.
Required educational background
High School diploma or equivalent required.
