Assistant Curator/Curator

The San José Museum of Art (SJMA) seeks a creative, self-motivated, intellectually curious individual to join the curatorial team as an Assistant Curator or Curator. SJMA believes in the power of radical imagination and the role art can play in bringing communities together. Our program reflects the diverse cultures and innovative spirit of Silicon Valley, connecting the present and the past, the art of the West Coast and the world.
Reporting to the Chief Curator, the Curator/Assistant Curator is a key member of a small team who works closely alongside colleagues across departments in SJMA's dynamic and collaborative environment. In addition to generating original exhibitions (spanning group, thematic, and solo formats), programs and publications, the Curator/Assistant Curator will envision projects that embrace different formats, platforms, perspectives, and disciplines that expand traditional museum-going experiences, and invite new audiences. The successful candidate collaboratively strategize focused acquisitions and is an excellent communicator. They have a passion for creative curatorial projects that align SJMA's focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, that are thought-provoking and accessible to broad audiences. The successful candidate is connected with San Jose audiences.
The Curator/Assistant Curator manages all aspects of curatorial project development including but not limited to ideation, exhibition research, writing, exhibition checklists, loan requests, publications, budgets, and administrative duties. They will work closely with the Curatorial team on acquisitions and stewardship of the growing permanent collection. This position represents SJMA within the wider community and contributes to SJMA's Development, Marketing & Communications, Education, and Curatorial projects/events as determined by the Curatorial Department.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide SJMA with curatorial expertise within a collaborative and mission-focused environment that prioritizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Actively engage in original research and development of curatorial projects that are not limited to but include a focus on new media, emergent artistic and cultural practices, bring to light overlooked artists and ideas, and explore issues that contextualize and resonate with our local audiences
Produce essays, exhibition checklists, develop audience-facing didactics, gallery tours, correspondence, manage publications, and other interpretive materials.
Work collaboratively across teams, including working closely with Development on fundraising, program ideation in tandem with Education; and working with Marketing on outreach initiatives including press releases, and social media.
Manage exhibitions workflow and any related programs and publications. Duties include management of budgeting with Chief Curator, maintenance of timelines, and miscellaneous administrative responsibilities. Communicate and collaborate across departments as exhibitions develop to maintain flow of communication and resource sharing.
Act as curator in charge of traveling exhibitions, handling all aspects related to this function.
Work collaboratively with curatorial team on strategic acquisitions for growing permanent collection. Actively contribute to collection strategies and stewardship discussions.
Donor cultivation and participation in fundraising with development department
Represent SJMA within the Museum and the art community; attend SJMA Development and Curatorial events and attend outside art openings, programs, conferences, lectures, and meetings. Actively visit graduate departments, galleries, and nonprofit arts organizations. Participate in local and global art communities, and present new ideas from the field to the curatorial team.

Qualifications
Assistant Curator
A passion for SJMA's mission and belief in art as a powerful engine for positive social change. A passion for supporting underrepresented artists and emerging ideas in contemporary culture.
A passion for and knowledge of new and expanding media art practices relevant to Silicon Valley audiences.
Art-related experience in a gallery, presenting organization, or museum setting is essential. Experience conducting original research to develop curatorial projects spanning group, thematic, and solo formats.
Must demonstrate strong initiative and be a self-starter, able to work independently and proactively manage projects with minimal supervision.
Experience working with artists on exhibitions, commissions, and installations.
Excellent communication, writing, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
Must be a learner, open to feedback, collaborative, and interested in contributing to a strong and inclusive work culture
Must possess exceptional organizational skills, be detailed oriented and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Must be community-minded, and open to engaging with San Jose communities
Knowledge of collection management and current museum practices.
Curator
All qualifications above and a track record of realizing a variety of curatorial projects, as well as writing, editing, and producing publications.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Art History, or a related field, plus 2-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's Degree is preferred.
Minimum 5-7 years of experience required for the Curator role.
Position title will be determined based on experience.
Special Requirements
SJMA is currently operating on a hybrid in person / remote work model.
Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required.

Who We Are
The Bentley Historical Library collects material related to the State of Michigan and the University of Michigan. The 11,000 research collections at the Bentley range from the papers of governors of Michigan, to the records of student and faculty life at the University, to the historical record of intercollegiate athletics at Michigan, and more.
Instruction is part of our Public Engagement team, which also includes our reference and event or exhibit collaborations. The Public Engagement team ensures access to material for researchers of all backgrounds and levels of experience.

Responsibilities*
* Grow the existing teaching program at the Bentley
* Take a leading role in working with faculty and fellow archivists to design and execute meaningful archival instruction sessions for a range of audiences
* Strengthen the Bentley's instructional collaborations on campus, in the community, and in K-12 education through active outreach
* Maintain the course schedule and documentation of instruction efforts, including metrics and reports that track engagement with various departments and programs
* Lead the Bentley's instruction committee, a group comprised of Bentley archivists leading instruction sessions
* Collaborate with staff at the Detroit Observatory, a part of the Bentley Historical Library, to arrange and plan course instruction across BHL locations

Required Qualifications*
* Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution. An advanced degree in a related discipline combined with relevant experience may be substituted

* Demonstrated experience using physical and digital archival material to design instruction sessions

Job Summary:
Assists in development and coordination of exhibits, programs, and research activities. May also serve as a museum specialist in such areas as collections, historic sites, historic archaeology, manuscripts and archival materials, or education.

Job Duties:
* Ensures that the exhibits are clean and all objects, panels, and photos are in accordance with museum standards; this includes and is not limited to serving on any committees as needed by AHS, attending and hosting in virtual and in person programs as needed by the exhibits team, working with the and any AHS partner organizations, and working with marketing and experience ideas teams as needed
* Curator II will assist the exhibits team and supervisor in installing any new temporary, permanent, and updated exhibits as needed; this includes, but is not limited to: painting galleries, installing cases, hanging panels and photographs, handling and installing objects, and any other necessary tasks
* Installation and deinstall of exhibits requires travel to the four museum locations at times and will require driving the state van and transporting objects and materials as needed for that process

* Secures objects for exhibitions, conducts research, works collaboratively with other staff in the development of narratives and story lines
