Accountability: Performs engine operation, on-ground duties, equipment and track maintenance and other assigned duties to assist in an efficient railroad operation. Expected to progress in skill and responsibilities of train operations over time with the eventual goal of becoming the Train Crew Member responsible for locomotive engineering duties.
Responsibilities:
* Assists in all phases of the safe daily operation of trains.
* Operates equipment according to company policies, procedures and practices in all areas, including equipment usage and maintenance, safety (FRA and OSHA), and DOT requirements.
* Will operate track switches, couple cars and work on freight trains in yard operations and on the road.
* Will move and align various parts of rail equipment to create or build trains.

* Multi-tasking - must be able to perform several tasks safely that will require pulling, controlling and maneuvering onto and off of equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities
Obtain and receive information and act on oral or written instructions by various communication devices
Climb on/off equipment, set/release hand brakes, couple/uncouple air hoses, operate knuckle to couple/uncouple rail cars
Hold meetings with crew to communicate and delegate action plan for the day
Judge and control speed as well as clearance distance of cars
Operate track switches and other equipment to change train routing within yards or on road
Check switch points for proper alignment
Switch, spot cars and determine train make-up
Walk and perform work on uneven surfaces.
Observe and monitor track conditions (e.g., broken rails, defective switches, weather-related problems)
Inspect cars for visual defects and safety concerns
Walk tracks to perform inspections and track checks.
Report any damages or maintenance issues with the rail equipment.
Follow and enforce Personal Property Equipment (PPE) policy
Assist other areas of the transload terminal as needed.
Any other duties as assigned by the terminal manager.

The purpose of the Crew Volunteer Program is to give students the opportunity to tangibly serve and lead in the community while learning and growing in who they are in Christ and as future leaders. This program also provides an opportunity for students to complete community service hours for school as well as a great experience for students to include in their college resumes and applications.
Our hope is that high school students will be able to step out of the classroom and their church youth groups to act on the things that they've learned in a service-oriented capacity.
