Military and Family Life Counselor - School

This position is in person at schools affiliated with MCAS New River. Candidates must be local or be willing to relocate to become local and must be licensed at the independent level as a Social Worker (LCSW), Therapist (LMFT), or Mental Health Counselor (LPC/LCMHC). Relocation assistance may be available.
This position has the primary responsibility of providing the full breadth of Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of all ages of military service members and their families at military installations and off military installations. These services may include non-medical counseling, training/ health and wellness presentations, consultation with parents, personnel, schools, and consultation to installation command regarding behavioral health issues affecting children and youth. CYB School counselors will be assigned to Department of Defense (DoDEA) schools and community schools and will need to have experience working in a school setting to qualify for a school position. CYB School counselors will also be assigned to youth programs, summer camps, and on demand assignments. The counselors work closely with the installation and military branch Points of Contact (POC) to assure that the program is provided within scope and meets the needs of the installation and the schools.
Provides non-medical, short-term, solution focused, counseling directly to eligible children and youth of service members at assigned primary and secondary locations. Services include assessment, brief counseling and consultation, action planning, referral to resources (assuring linkage as appropriate), and follow-up as indicated.
CYB counselors will also have a focus on supporting the staff and personnel of DoDEA , community schools, summer camps (if available/assigned) as well as providing parent training and guidance.
Provides training and health and wellness presentations, participates in health fairs and other base/installation activities focused on children and youth.
Enters counselor activity data daily through smart phone, or web application, to assure that reporting is accurate from assigned installation while maintaining confidentiality and anonymity of service/family member.
Establishes and maintains working relationships with community resources focused on children and youth and provides appropriate linkages. Consistently visible within the school which allows MFLC services to be accessible when working with children, the counselor must abide by line of sight protocol (another adult with responsibility for the child must be able to see the counselor and child they are working with at all times).
Partners with POC to provide CYB services in a manner that addresses the needs of the installation/facility. Develops an effective and professional working relationship with the installation/facility POC.
Manages duty to warn and restricted reporting situations according to DoD protocol and staffs the cases with Regional Supervisor/Regional Director.
Communicates with Regional Supervisor and participates in regular individual and group supervision, sharing information regarding trends and issues on the installations and in facilities to which they are assigned. Responds to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) program manager. The CYB will flex schedule to respond to urgent requests as needed or at the request of the Regional Supervisor/Regional Director.
Participates in regular in-services/training, Quality Improvement committees, initiatives, studies, pilot programs other contract activities as assigned/appropriate as directed by the customer and/or Magellan. This includes participation in pilot program certification and training processes, completion of activity documentation, integration of pilot activities in non-medical counseling work, and the utilization of applicable technology to complete required activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
* Patrol grounds by foot or by vehicle for the protection and security of buildings, equipment, living areas, and fenced-in areas; inspect for hazards, contraband, unauthorized persons, and eloping residents. Conduct searches to find and retrieve missing and eloped residents. Assist in coordinating these searches with other agencies. Inspect and maintain all equipment assigned to the Security Department.
* Respond to calls for assistance or for emergencies relating to resident disturbances, CSU admissions, medical emergencies, fires and other types of disaster situations. Responsible for the physical control of combative residents.
* Operate the Welcome Center; log in visitors and staff, observe for unauthorized entry and all vehicles for items that should be bolted down or locked inside. Issue parking passes/decals and maintain appropriate records.
* Patrol for traffic and parking violations; issue department tickets to violators. Assist and monitor the flow of traffic control devices. Assist in the investigation of traffic accidents occurring on grounds.
* Conduct hospital-wide fire drills. Inspect fire extinguishers, fire alarms and warning devices. Participate in disaster preparedness drills. Conduct safety inspections of residents' living areas, their activity areas and staff offices looking for hazards or contraband.
* Make routine inspections of buildings in designated zones; conduct walk-throughs; check unoccupied areas and living areas in designated zones, watching for anything that may compromise the environment's safety and security.
* Serve as Centrex Operator. Duties include answering incoming local and long-distance telephone calls. Make proper connections to persons or offices via an on-line employee directory lookup with multiple search criteria. Place local and long-distance telephone calls for both staff and the people served. Maintain records of calls placed for the purpose of verification of billing. Operate a two-way radio communications system and paging system. Alert and/or dispatch Security staff, Emergency Response Team and other hospital staff as necessary. Obtain and log information necessary to provide response to emergencies.
* Provide escort of residents to and from institution terminals and other hospitals and mental health facilities.
* Assist Transportation with medical runs as needed.
* Participate as a designee in meetings, special projects, or special functions as appointed, representing the department in a professional and courteous manner. Provide feedback to the Shift Supervisor or Mental Health Security Chief as needed.

Essential Functions
1. Designs and implements a data-driven, comprehensive guidance program to meet the academic, career, and social/personal needs of students at the school as outlined in the District School Counseling Plan. Supervises the maintenance and procedures regarding student records.
2. Conducts classroom guidance activities focused on academic, career, and social emotional learning.
3. Monitors each student's State Assessment requirements and course requirements for promotion and/or graduation.
4. Implements, in conjunction with teachers and staff, the district career program to provide for students information on curriculum and specific programs; postsecondary opportunities; scholarships and financial aid; and career opportunities.
5. Makes student referrals to school and community agencies and provides regular and appropriate feedback to teachers.
6. Offers developmental and preventive individual and group counseling for all students.
7. Conducts planned articulation and orientation program for feeder schools.
8. Serves as a resource person for school staff on guidance-related activities and techniques.
9. Coordinates district/community counseling services conducted in the school, including the services of the student services team that serves the school.
10. Provides students, parents, and teachers with appropriate and necessary support, consultative services, and training.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: None.
Certifications & Licenses: Florida Department of Education Specialization Requirements for Certification in Guidance and Counseling.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of Florida Statutes governing promotion, graduation, state assessment program, compulsory school attendance, credits, Florida Virtual School, and home school
• Knowledge of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Exceptional Student Education services eligibility requirements

The Patient Family Counselor is responsible for providing counseling and support for patients, families and caregivers. This includes the development of goals and objectives and the direct provision of care for patient, family, and caregiver.
Responsibilities:
Provide direct patient care as assigned.
Communicate findings to physicians, nurses, allied health and extended interdisciplinary team.
Perform social evaluations including, family dynamics, caregiving abilities, communication patterns, high risk for suicide, neglect or abuse, and plans based on evaluation findings.
Provide crisis intervention when necessary.
Educate interdisciplinary group on special needs related to the cultural differences, learning style, learning limitations, communication style, and roles within the family.

Qualifications:
Master's Degree Required
Licensed Social Worker (LCSW) and/or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
Minimum one of year experience in a hospital or medical setting
May be a Licensed Marriage/ Family Therapist (LMFT) With more than 2 years experience in hospital/ medical setting
Knowledge of patient and/or family caregiver support, including the necessary knowledge, experience and clinical skills.
Analytical ability necessary to solve complex administrative and clinical problems. Ability to evaluate needs of patient populations and develop programs to meet those needs.
Interpersonal skills necessary to motivate and provide direction. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management.
Compensation: Experience and education may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
