The Corrections Officer is responsible for securing inmates in the County Jail. This work involves enforcing rules and regulations, preventing escapes, maintaining order and discipline among inmates, and escorting inmates to and from their cells. Work also involves transportation and supervision of inmates to and from court, hospital, and within the jail facility. Basic records are kept; officers are uniformed. Supervision is received from command staff on an assigned shift. This job title operates on three eight-hour fifteen-minute shifts. Corrections Officers are members of Police Benevolent Labor Committee, Corrections Unit.
Requirements
Applicants must be 21 years of age at the time of application. You must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Applicants must have no felony convictions or pending cases. You must be willing to work any shift and possess a valid driver's license. Education - applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. We prefer candidates with at least 30 college credit hours in psychology, criminology, and related fields, who have at least two years of military service and/or prior experience in corrections, law enforcement, security, or any other management.
Successful applicants must take and pass a written exam, physical agility test (click here for more information), work-related - medical/physical examination and pass a background investigation, including criminal history status. In addition to the first year of requirements, candidates must also successfully pass all aspects of the Correctional Field Training Program within the first year of employment. New employees must become State Certified Corrections Officers from the Illinois Training Board. The criteria for certification are two hundred (200) hours of academy training, fifteen (15) hours of more advanced training that includes the Law regarding Corrections, Human Growth and Development, and Prison Organizations. Must pass a one (1) week Direct Supervision class. Candidates who successfully complete the written test will be given further information on the testing process. Successful completion of the above qualifications does not guarantee employment.

Job Summary: The Correctional Officers with MCSO will facilitate booking, identification, release, classification and monitoring of occupants at Milwaukee County Jail, a maximum-security facility. They will perform this process properly, maintain a safe and secure facility. Assist law enforcement, courts, attorneys & prisons. This job exists to ensure occupant rights from the time of booking until release and to ensure safety and security of the occupants, the staff and the community.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
* Process occupants through booking, identification, classifying, housing and release. Review arrest information, determine the validity of the arrest documents. Assist intake court in processing the case files and occupant court appearances. Collect DNA samples when required.
* Monitor, supervise, ensure safety and security of occupants while using professional communication skills and specialized training. Ensure the facility security is not breached. Assist in special assignments. Keep occupants and community safe.
* Provide secure movement throughout the facility to include intake/preliminary court, criminal proceedings & trials, medical appointments, education needs, professional/nonprofessional visits. Weapons COs escort occupants off premises and convey money to the treasurer.
* Full knowledge of MCSO and WI DOC policies/rules regarding the proper housing and treatment of occupants to include the discipline, rights and privileges of occupants and special procedures responsibilities for special posts.
* Specialized training is required to ensure the safety and needs of all occupants who have various ranges of mental health/medical needs. Monitor their behavior and conditions closely.
* Respond to alarms & incidents within the facility. Assist to gain control of uncooperative/combative occupants to gain compliance. Respond to all fire and duress alarms in all the Courthouse Complex buildings between the hours of 5pm and 7am.
* As trained first responder provide emergency medical care to the level of training. Use verbal skills and trained techniques to respond to suicidal occupants and to calm and control combative and mentally ill occupants.
* Using handheld radios as a primary source, communicate to a centralized dispatch center within the jail to coordinate communication and assignments. Phones or other devices may also be used as directed. Proper communication protocol and usage is essential.

* Enforce Rules and Keep Order: Inside the jail, Correctional Officers enforce rules and regulations. They maintain security by settling disputes between inmates, preventing disturbances, assaults and escapes. Officers enforce regulations through effective communication and the use of progressive sanctions, which involve punishments, such as loss of privileges.
* Supervise the Activities of Inmates: Correctional Officers supervise the daily activities of inmates, ensuring that inmates obey the rules. They must also ensure the whereabouts of all inmates at all times. Activities include meal distribution, medication distribution, laundry exchange, work assignments, sleeping and other regular housing activity.
* Search for Contraband Items: Officers search inmates and their living quarters for contraband, such as weapons and drugs. In addition, Officers are responsible for screening visitors and incoming mail to ensure contraband is not brought into the jail.
* Inspect Facilities to Ensure That They Meet Standards: Correctional Officers regularly inspect facilities. They check cells and other areas for unsanitary conditions, contraband, signs of a security breach (such as tampering with window bars and doors) and any other evidence of violations of the rules.
* Report on Inmate Conduct: Correctional Officers must report any inmate who violates the rules. If a crime is committed within their institution or an inmate escapes, they help law enforcement authorities investigate and search for the escapee. Correctional Officers are responsible for writing reports and filling out daily logs detailing inmate behavior and anything else of note that occurred during their shift.
You must have a high school diploma or equivalent; or will have obtained this by the date of hire. Prior experience in public safety or customer service will be very helpful but not a necessity. You must have basic math skills as well as reading and writing since you will need to interpret document information from multiple sources in a fast-paced environment. Your work will involve using computers and technology so the ability to type and complete basic computer tasks is essential.
TRAINING & CERTIFICATIONS
Walworth County will provide you with the training required to become a successful Correctional Officer. Training includes, but is not limited to, 12 weeks of in-depth on the job training, and within the first year, attendance and successful completion of the 5 weeks of Wisconsin Basic Jail Academy, which is paid for by Walworth County. Correctional Officers are required to attend 24 hours of re-certification every year with different topics covered. We will provide you with the tools and support for you to achieve success.

Pay level for this position:
* $99,461.00-$128,329.00
Salary is commensurate with base, locality, and availability pay.
*MAJOR DUTIES *
* Plan and conduct investigations of potential violations of federal laws, cybersecurity, and public safety.
* Exercise judgment, resourcefulness, and versatility in meeting investigative demands.
* Create and maintain effective liaison relationships with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and international law enforcement agencies.
* Maintain a level of physical fitness to ensure the readiness required to perform law enforcement duties.
*KEY REQUIREMENTS *
* Must be a U.S. citizen.
* Must be able to obtain a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) Clearance.
* Must be willing to travel as required.
* Must meet the FBI's Employment Eligibility requirements.
*EDUCATION*
* Candidates must have a bachelor's degree or higher (preferably in accounting or a related field such as business administration, finance, or forensic accounting) from a U.S. accredited college or university.
