    JOB DESCRIPTION FOR Chess COACH Classification: Exempt Reports To: Head of the Upper School Purpose The purpose of this position is to support the school's mission statement by helping to develop well-rounded young men and women who demonstrate Christ-like humility and selflessness coupled with confidence and poise on the field of play. Summary The coach performs all activities necessary to carry out the aims and objectives of the sport as outlines by the Upper School Head. This includes emphasizing and encouraging a balanced approach to faith, family, academics, and sports; providing training and coaching to enable students to perform with excellence and self-discipline for future Kingdom service; and supporting an athletic culture that demands honor and respect while representing the cause of Christ well in all its activities. Supervision Received and Exercised The coach receives direction from the Upper School Head. The Coach must exercise judgment that is in keeping with the school's philosophy of education, beliefs and values, and with the approved approach to discipline. The Coach exercises functional supervision over student athletes, team managers, and trainers. Work Schedule This is a part-time, seasonal position. The exact daily work schedule is driven by practice times and team events. Travel to athletic events off campus is required. Classroom and Program Management and Organization * Create classroom environments conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. * Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. * Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. * Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials. * Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required. * Assist with the establishment of performance criteria for competition and evaluation of students' athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis. Model performance criteria and physical movements required for successful student performance of sport. * Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities. * Assist with coordinating travel arrangements to out-of-town events. * Ensure compliance with all UIL rules. * Assist with the development and coordination of a continuing evaluation of a coaching program and make suggestions based on findings. Student Management * Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports both at-home and on out-of-town trips. * Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices. * Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. * Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation. Communication * Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members. * Maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers. Professional Growth and Development * Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. * Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers. . * Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Administration * Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials. * Assist with the compilation, maintenance, and filing of all reports, records, and other documents required. * Assist with the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment. * Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Supervisory Responsibilities: * Assign and oversee completion of the work of student athletic assistants.
