Job Summary Responsible for the coordination or for assisting with the coordination of the Kamehameha Athletic Sports program. This includes coaching, instructing students and performing other duties necessary to the development of players and teams, which demonstrates skills and values in keeping with Kamehameha's philosophy of athletics. Essential Responsibilities * Demonstrates thorough knowledge of sport including knowledge of all rules and regulations; skills, tactics and techniques. Translates sports knowledge to athletes and develops and evaluates athlete's and team's performance and progress. Teaches individual and team skills to athletes. Identifies observable outcomes besides just winning and losing. Assists athletes to reach their full potential. Has the ability and patience to develop athletes. Addresses athletes' individual needs (not at the expense of the entire team). * Organizes and supervises well-planned, safe and efficient practices and games by utilizing coaching staff effectively and efficiently. Prepares team for games/matches/meets. * Conducts self in an ethical and professional manner and presents self as a positive role model for the athletes. Respects athletes and motivates and inspires players. Displays encouraging conduct and has a positive attitude with athletes. * Develops team concept in student-athletes within values-driven framework of the KS organization. Promotes sportsmanship and respect for game rules and respect for officials. Provides a good balance between skill development and team concepts. Addresses each player as part of a team. * Assists athletes to reach their full potential. Provides an enjoyable environment and experience. * Handles administrative responsibilities such as resolving disciplinary issues appropriately and effectively; ensuring student-athlete medical and academic eligibility; and completing other administrative responsibilities timely and responsibly. (e.g. grade checks, student-athlete records, timesheets, human resources requirements). Acts responsibly with regards to equipment, uniforms, etc. such as assisting equipment and locker room personnel as necessary; assisting with planning and budgeting for the sport; and inventorying equipment. * Communicates effectively with athletes, parents, faculty, administrators, other coaches, and the community as appropriate. Gets appropriate results to school and media timely. Promotes program in the local and state communities. Position Requirements Minimum Qualifications - A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the requirements listed. * High School Diploma or GED. * Minimum of 1 year experience in coaching. * National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Fundamentals of Coaching Certification. * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to relate effectively with a variety of individuals to include students, coaches, other KS staff, physicians, parents, teachers and administrators. * Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities simultaneously. * Previous coaching experience. * Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends on a frequent basis. Administrative Duties 20% * Ensure that all compliance reports are completed thoroughly and on time - CARA reports, practice logs, recruiting logs, and input all on the Compliance Assistant program and other designated programs by the athletics department. * Complete proper paperwork for athletics (including expense reports, travel expenses, reimbursement reports). * Attend all Chaminade athletic department meetings to include required monthly compliance continuing education sessions. * Obtains and maintains necessary and applicable NCAA and other coaching certifications * Responsible for the team's equipment needs (uniforms, practice gear, balls, cones), managing the team's budget for the same, and arranging for design, purchase, and distribution of the same as needed. * Continuously liaise and communicate with the Athletic Director, athletic department staff, PacWest Conference coaches, and others regarding scheduling games, training, and other matters relating to the team's training or match schedules. Other Duties as Assigned by Supervisor 5% * Assist the Director of Athletics and Sports Information in community engagement projects for all sports programs, including clinics geared towards middle and elementary-age students. Work on community engagement activities to get these youngsters and their parents to attend Chaminade games, as many sports as feasible. Duties and Responsibilities: Under administrative direction, Coach is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating the overall operations of the NCAA Division I Softball Program to include, but not limited to, academic achievement of student-athletes, recruitment of qualified prospects, supervision of assistant coaches and other staff assigned to the program, compliance, program management (eligibility, scheduling, travel, budget, equipment), and student-athlete well-being. The Head Coach assumes full responsibility for ensuring that team performance is competitive in the affiliated conference with the goal of achieving post-season competition. Reports to the Director of Athletics or designee. *Promotes the institutional position on intercollegiate issues as determined under administrative policy and procedures adopted by the University, Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). *Provides leadership and oversight for the academic progress and eligibility status of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation. *Organizes, conducts, directs, and evaluates practices and intercollegiate competitions. Teaches necessary skills from basic fundamentals to techniques and strategies of team play to ensure student-athlete development. Directs the conditioning and training of student-athletes to ensure proper preparation for intercollegiate athletic competition. *Develops and implements a recruiting program which evaluates, recruits, and selects qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically. Actively seeks and encourages a diverse group of prospects and assists them through the application process. Works collaboratively with the staff of the Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Student-Athlete Academic Services Offices to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner. Make recurring contacts by phone, written correspondence, off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits. *Recommends scholarship awards for student-athletes to the Athletics Director or designee. *Oversees the academic progress and success of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation. *Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority and prevents other influences that may interfere with their scholastic, athletics, or related interests. *Promotes and fosters a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members, assistant coaches, and staff. Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the field. *Recommends budget and administers approved allocation. *In collaboration with the assigned equipment manager, oversees the selection, purchase, fitting, and upkeep of team equipment. *Exercises functional and administrative supervision for any assigned assistant coaches and other support staff, to include their compliance with NCAA, Conference and University rules and policies which govern the conduct of the Intercollegiate Athletic program. Prepares data and reports as necessary in support of University requirements. *Recommends future competitive competition schedule, personnel, financial and facilities requirements for Softball to the Athletics Director or designee. *Arranges a competitive competition schedule as approved and coordinate travel arrangements needed in support thereof. *Organizes and participates in clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved. *Confers with the Athletics Director or designee on personnel, financial and facilities requirements for the sport program. *Actively participates in fundraising, promotional activities, speaking engagements, and alumni events as requested or approved for the sports program. Participate in public relations activities that strengthen the relationship between the University and the Community. Builds, develops and/or manages name, image, and likeness (NIL) initiatives in collaboration with UHMAD that benefits softball student-athletes. *Per NCAA Division I Bylaw 11.1.1.1 or as amended, the head coach is presumed to be responsible for the actions of all institutional staff members who report, directly, or indirectly, to the head coach. The head coach shall promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program and shall monitor the activities of all institutional staff members involved with the program who report, directly or indirectly, to the coach. *Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act. *Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies. *Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators, staff, and coaches in the department, other college offices, affiliated Conference offices and peers, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the Athletics Department. *Knows, recognizes and complies with the laws, policies, rules and regulations governing the University of Hawai‘i and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future. Minimum Qualification Requirements: Possession of a baccalaureate degree and three (3) years of experience coaching softball at the college or university level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Knowledge and ability to organize, implement and develop a successful softball program as played at the Division I collegiate level. Demonstrated ability to recruit academically and athletically prepared Division I student-athletes. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish, foster, and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays Ability to lead/supervise/evaluate assistant coaches/staff. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds including but not limited to people of all ages with various ethnicities, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
