Police Officer Trainees attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certified Police Academy. After successful completion of academy, Police Officer Trainees will have the opportunity to be promoted to the position of Police Officer (Academy Graduate). As a Police Officer, Academy Graduates will be assigned to complete an in-house field training program under the direction of a Field Training Officer. Academy graduates will perform responsible police work, crime prevention, and community service functions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work may require nights, weekends, and holidays. Training may include physical training; emergency vehicle operations; firearm training. Work may include substantial periods of time exposed to various weather conditions (including extreme heat and rain), irritants and allergens.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Applicants must be 21 years old at the time of appointment or older and be in excellent health (as determined by a pre-employment physical examination). Ability to lift, carry, drag, pull, push persons or objects weighing at least 160 pounds and the ability to run for extended periods are time are required. Also requires walking and prolonged sitting, discharging firearms and using impact weapons. Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes, normal color vision and hearing acuity are required. Incumbents must meet any other criteria mandated by the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST).
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This classification differs from Police Officer in that the Police Officer Trainee is assigned to a police academy designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system including knowledge of laws and training in police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid and physical fitness. Incumbents in this classification receive training in a controlled classroom environment. Sworn officer status is not received until successful academy completion and official processing through procedures to become a classified Police Officer.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Instruction is received from academy instructors; receives general supervision from a Police Officer or Sergeant.Experience:
None required. However, some experience in law enforcement work is preferred.
Education:
An Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, psychology, business administration, public administration or related field or 60-semester units from an accredited college or university is required at time of appointment to Police Officer. Appointment to Police Officer occurs after graduation from a POST certified police academy.
* College credits earned while attending the police academy may be applied toward the 60-semester unit requirement.
* Candidates may be credited with 36-semester credits for a minimum of 4 years of active duty in the U.S. Armed Services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force and Coast Guard).

What You'll Do

* Assist in the installation, calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of electronic and electromechanical equipment to ensure proper operation; assist in the troubleshooting and repairing of control system and electrical power failures in the WWTP, pump and lift station.

What You'll Do
The Vehicle Abatement Officer, general supervision, investigates, monitors, and enforces vehicle abatement code and ordinance violations, issues citations for parking violations, arranges for towing, and responds to public questions and concerns. Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Respond to and investigate complaints, either from the public or self-initiated, of abandoned vehicles in violation of the San Mateo Municipal Code and the California Vehicle Code.
* Process and abate abandoned vehicles as outlined in the California Vehicle Code, San Mateo Municipal Code, and Police Department Policy, including issue parking citations, conduct private property vehicle abatements, establish, and maintain protocols for large vehicle (RV, bus) abatement, ensure vehicle owners and/or lien holders are provided with up-to-date information.
* Annually review all applicable abandoned vehicle fees to ensure financial integrity.
* Coordinate with other City departments for abandoned vehicle issues.
* May assist with administrative or citation reviews to include tow hearings.

The Public Works Department is comprised of Regulatory Compliance, Engineering, Field Maintenance, Facilities/Fleet, Wastewater Treatment, and Asset Management Divisions. Each division is led by one of two Deputy Directors, who report to the Director of Public Works. The department is responsible for the City's major capital projects and infrastructure including streets, street lights, traffic signals, publicly owned facilities, sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, a major lagoon, dams, and levees; as well as solid waste and environmental programs. The City of San Mateo wastewater treatment facility and collection system are undergoing major renovation projects over the next five years valued over $100 million dollars through the Clean Water Program. What You'll Do
This is position will perform a variety of physical, chemical, biological and bacteriological analyses of water and
wastewater according to standard methods and procedures; and to do related work as required.
Laboratory Analyst I - This is the entry level class in the Laboratory Analyst series. This class is distinguished from the Laboratory Analyst II by the performance of the routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including standardized laboratory tests on samples of wastewater and sewage. Assignments are generally limited in scope and within the design and procedural framework established by higher level employees. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. This position receives immediate supervision from the Laboratory Supervisor.
Laboratory Analyst II - This is the journey level class within the Laboratory Analyst series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Laboratory Analyst I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Work in this class is distinguished from that of Laboratory Analyst I by the greater complexity of the assignments received and by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Laboratory Analyst I or, when filled from the outside, require prior wastewater treatment experience. This position receives general supervision from the Laboratory Supervisor and may exercise technical or functional supervision over less experienced staff.
Depending upon assignments, some duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
* Following established procedures, perform physical, chemical and bacteriological analyses of water, wastewater and related materials.
* Collect varied samples for analysis from specific locations according to a predetermined schedule; may collect special samples as conditions indicate.
* May collect industrial waste samples as part of the plant's pretreatment program.
* Prepare chemicals, bacteriological media, stairs and standard test solutions.
* Compile and record onto standardized worksheets, logs and forms, perform calculations and transfer data to computer.
* Clean and maintain laboratory, equipment and instruments; repair and calibrate equipment.
* Maintain inventory of supplies.
* May instruct new or lower level employees in the specific procedures of the work.
* Assist in completing technical reports.
* May assist on special projects, such as laboratory safety programs.
* Assist in the development of new procedures.
* Serve on committees within the plant and for special projects.
* Operate equipment.
* Perform inspections on equipment and process for proper functioning.
* Formulate solutions to problems with operations, including problems with test results, sophisticated machinery and processes.
* Assist members of the public, other departments, and own department with questions.
* Verify the work of others for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance.
* Schedule and supervise assigned staff.

What You Bring
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Laboratory Analyst I:
* One year of work experience in an analytical laboratory.
* Two years of college study with at least twenty semester units of chemistry, biology or related science. A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or related science would also be qualifying.
Laboratory Analyst II
* Either Two years of experience in a wastewater treatment plant laboratory and a Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certificate from the California Water Environment Association; Or
* Grade II Laboratory Analyst Certificate from the California Water Environment Association.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, the California Water Environment Association Grade I Laboratory Analyst Certificate no later than two years after date of hire.
Bonus Points (highly desirable)
Possession of a Laboratory Analyst Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association is desirable.
