THE AFTER SCHOOL CENTER (ASC)
During the regular school year, New City Kids operates an after school center that includes an art and music component as well as academic support. Children are given the opportunity to choose classes based on their interests (keyboards, drums, bass, ESL, etc.) For one hour, students attend their class; for a second hour, they complete homework with an assigned tutor. Tutors are coached by New City Kids adult staff, while teen performing arts teachers are taught by a professional musician once a week in both music and music teaching.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
TUTORS
Spend 30-45 minutes greeting the children and playing organized activities with them as they enter the ASC.
Participate in “community time” from 3:30-4:00 doing tasks that staff assign to you, including singing with kids, encouraging kids to participate and cleaning snack tables.
Work with groups of 4-5 children for an hour at a time helping them complete their homework; this is not doing their homework for them, but actively leading them through each assignment, asking questions and listening until they get the answers for themselves.
Check their homework to make sure it is complete and accurate.
Clean up the classrooms after the children leave.
TEACHERS (MUSIC & ACTIVITY)

Prepare activities and lesson plans for assigned classes.
Facilitate group activities and projects in classes that foster children mastering concepts and promote a positive community at New City Kids.

Teach curriculum developed by adult staff/master teacher to both the advanced and beginner keyboard, drum, and guitar classes.
Apply musical concepts in ways that go beyond the written curriculum assignments.
Prepare children for their regular performances by determining what their needs are and adapting your lesson's to individual's needs.

Additional Information:
The Special Events Aide is directly responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, delivery, setup, and retrieval of City of Grand Rapids' special events rental equipment. The Special Events Aide will prepare rental equipment in response to requests, coordinate with event organizers to determine event layouts, ensure events using city services are running smoothly, minimize event day problems, maintain and repair equipment, coordinate pickups and drop offs, schedule meetings with organizers to review site layouts, setup and tear down rented equipment including mobile stages, free standing stages, mobile bleachers, fencing, power supplies, tents, tables, chairs, podiums, and microphones; maintain equipment is in good working order, keep equipment inventory, and plow snow as needed for event activities. The Aide will also decorate and pull the City float in parades, program lights and sound on the showmobiles, and source replacement and new equipment to keep up with demand.
The position may include collecting, interpreting, and disseminating post special event evaluation information as well as assisting in research projects for best processes and procedures for the Office of Special Events. The Special Events Aide must always present a positive and professional image for the City of Grand Rapids. Work is performed under the direction of the Special Events Supervisor.

Compensation Range: $19 to $21 hourly. The base compensation range above represents the anticipated low and high end of the national salary range for this position.
Actual compensation may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to work location, experience, and performance.

* Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment that fosters social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development
* Observe and document children's progress, sharing insights with lead teachers to tailor educational approaches.
* Communicate effectively with families, providing updates on children's development and participating in home visits, parent-teacher conferences, and student-data meetings.
