Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Sitters assist in the provision of a safe and clean environment for patients who are deemed at risk for additional injury, due to physiologic, mental and/or behavioral limitations, has made recent suicide attempt, or is expressing suicidal ideations. A Patient Sitter is initiated by a physician order and/or nursing judgment. Under the supervision of an RN, a Patient Sitter provides:
Continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients.
The first line of action to verbally re direct the patient from engaging in risky behavior and summons additional help as needed.
The “On call sitter” position commits to 48 hours of call per 6 weeks. On call blocks are scheduled in 4 hour increments with up to 40 hours of commitment per sitter per week available per sitter position.
Responsibilities:
Obtains verbal report from the patient's nurse to include information regarding:
The patient's identified care needs including ambulation limitations, diagnosis, visual, auditory, or language barriers, course of action for redirection of patient as needed and any special consideration (NPO, bed alarms, etc.)
What patient activity and behavior needs to be communicated to the assigned nurse
The Patient Sitter should always maintain line of sight with the patient.
No electronic devices (Phone, tablet, ear buds) that distract the sitter from the observation duties can be used by the sitter while observing the patient even if the patient is asleep and/or sedated.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide each of your assigned residents with routine daily nursing care and services accordance with the resident's assessment and care plan, and as may be directed by your supervisors.

Nursing Department Functions
Prepare and administer medications according to health care provider instructions and within the scope of the license.
Answer resident call lights and bells, determine and address their request.
Responsible for the resident's environment so that it is comfortable and safe.
Inform the nurse of any changes in the resident's condition (e.g. vitals, reports of pain, etc.) so that appropriate information can be acted upon.
Complete pertinent clinical documentation according to policy.
Attend and participate in in-service training programs to meet state, federal, and company requirements.
Safety and Sanitation
Follow established safety precautions in the performance of all duties.
Clean, disinfect, and return all resident care equipment to its designated storage area after each use.
Perform routine housekeeping duties (i.e., clean bed rails, over bed table, night stand, etc., that relate to nursing care procedures).
Before leaving work area for breaks or the end of the work day, store all tools, equipment, and supplies.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, and accept constructive criticism. Must be able to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public. Must be able to work with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally upset people within the facility. Must be able to speak, write and understand English in a manner that is sufficient for effective communication with supervisors, employees, residents, and families.
