Job Description
The Staff Chaplain, or PRN Chaplain, provides age appropriate spiritual, emotional, and sacramental ministry for patients, families, and the staff of Truman Medical Centers, Inc. Chaplains serve through interdisciplinary care, 24/7 in house on the Hospital Hill campus. They maintain professional Chaplain Certification, and actively participate in continuing education. Chaplains are encouraged to have a strong overall background, and are encouraged to specialize in a particular area of care (Oncology, Cardiology, OB/GYN, etc.). Staff chaplains, serving cooperatively with other chaplains, provide appropriate religious / spiritual rites and services sensitive to the variety of spiritual / cultural / religious needs of patients, families and staff. Chaplains work in a team context, with accountability to one another and the Director of Spiritual Health Services.
Minimum Requirements
* Graduation from an accredited seminary, university or college with a Master's degree in a relevant area or equivalent. Usually this is a Masters of Divinity degree. Other educational backgrounds will be considered for equivalency on a case by cases basis.
* Successful completion of Level II CPE, four units total from a nationally recognized and accredited training center for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, NACC, and NAJC). This requirement may be adjusted for PRN staff based on skills and awareness acquired in other ways besides CPE.
* Four years of pastoral experience for Staff Chaplain/ one year of pastoral experience for PRN, which may include CPE.
* Strong motivation to carry out the services of the department as well as the ability to identify with and be sensitive to the cultural values and patterns of patients served by Truman Medical Centers.
* Ordination and/or ecclesiastical endorsement by a major faith group, e.g., as a Minister/Priest/Rabbi/Imam, and endorsement should be as a Chaplain.
* Must be skilled in empathy, objective listening, inter-faith orientation, team work, self-direction, functioning in a high stress environment, and providing spiritual care across cultural, racial, religious, and gender lines.
* Current Board Certification as a Chaplain by a Professional National Association in Healthcare ( APC, NACC, and NAJC) is expected of full time staff chaplains. Time lines for certification are negotiated with the Director if a full time staff chaplain is not presently certified. Certification of PRN chaplains is encouraged, but not required at the present time.

As a Hospice Chaplain, you will:
You will report directly to the Administrator or Executive Director.
You will be responsible for the spiritual services provided to hospice patients and families.
Participate in developing the interdisciplinary care plan.
Visit patients/families identified as appropriate for spiritual care services and provides direct spiritual support, counsel, prayer, and ministry as appropriate.
Assist members of the interdisciplinary team in understanding the significant spiritual concerns related to the patient/family response to dying.
Serve as liaison and resource for community spiritual leaders in dealing with hospice patient/family.
Assist members of the interdisciplinary team in understanding the significant spiritual concerns related to the patient/family response to dying.
Assist in training and education in spiritual care for hospice staff, volunteers, local clergy, nursing home staff, and the community.
About You
The candidate must meet ONE of the following requirements:
BS or BA in theology, religion, human services, counseling, psychology, or sociology from a college or university and/or as required by state-specific regulations.
A Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, theology or divinity from a college or university and/or as required by state-specific regulations. (Preferred.)
A minimum of one unit of Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE)-accredited CPE.
Note a degree received from an accredited college/university is preferred. If the degree is received from a non-accredited college or university, AVPO approval is required prior to hire.
Additional Experience:
Two years of active work in spiritual care ministry/ program, one unit of pastoral education (per state requirements, if indicated), and demonstrated ability to work with patients, families, and community spiritual leaders of various denominations/beliefs is required.
Three years of active work in hospice spiritual care support and one year of clinical pastoral education is preferred.
