Santa Clara County Fire Department is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Chaplain to support the mission, vision, and values of the Department. Under the direction of the Fire Chief or designee, and in coordination with the Administrative-Staff Honor Guard Liaison and the on-call Duty Chief, the Chaplain shall provide emotional and/or spiritual support, counseling, and crisis intervention services to members of the Department and their families, as well others in the community impacted by incidents responded to by the Department.
This is a uniformed, non-safety, at-will, volunteer position. Chaplains will receive a stipend as outlined in the Department's Volunteer Action Guide.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Crisis intervention for firefighters and their families - deaths, family issues, personal crises, and many other related issues. Assistance will be offered, and members' wishes to accept or decline will be respected.
Chaplains will be available to assist command staff in making notifications to the families of Fire Department members who have been seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.
In the event of a serious illness, injury, or death of a department member, the member's family will be offered the support of the Chaplain, including notification of a member's involvement in a critical incident, if appropriate; assistance at hospitals and rehabilitation facilities; and support in matters related to funerals.
May be notified and requested to visit sick and injured Department members.
May be requested to participate in the development of programs or other community events.
Participate in ride alongs with firefighters. Chaplains are non-suppression volunteers and will remain in the role of an observer.
Respond to major incidents or disasters to serve as a resource to emergency personnel, victims, and families. Chaplains will comply with orders and instructions of the officer in charge.
Participate in funerals or memorial services for active or retired employees as appropriate and assist family members in the preparation of funeral arrangements when requested.
Perform duties relating to their position as requested by the Fire Chief or designee.
Employment Standards
Qualifications Include:
Must be ordained or certified from a recognized religious organization or affiliated with a local religious organization.
Successful completion of a chaplain training course prior to start date or successful completion of a Department-funded chaplain training course within six months of start date.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands: Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments; regular contact is made with staff and the public. At times, this position requires working conditions that may include exposure to any number of elements (individuals with injuries, illness, toxic chemicals, hazardous substances, excessive heat, cold, noise, inclement weather, as well as occupational hazards such as exposure to smoke, fire, etc.) and may include standing, walking, or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
Required License: Possession of a valid state of California driver's license.

The Center for Elders' Independence is a PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the elderly) organization that uses an interdisciplinary team approach to care planning and care implementation for the purpose of providing high quality, affordable, integrated health care services to the elderly, including an Adult Day Health Center, and promoting autonomy, quality of life and the ability of individuals to live in their communities.
The Position: Under the direction of the Director of Behavioral Health, and in coordination with program staff, the Chaplain provides spiritual/pastoral support in accordance with ongoing wishes and needs of program participants, family, caregivers, and staff at assigned centers.
The salary range for the Chaplain position at Center for Elders Independence is $ 62,608 - $ 93.912 per year. Salary based on the market for the Chaplain position as well as experience, skills, abilities, and work history.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Provides spiritual/pastoral support in accordance with ongoing wishes and needs of the participant and family/caregivers across the CEI continuum of care.
* Supports Palliative Care and Hospice Programs goals and outcomes.
* Prepares report regarding participant encounters and referrals of pastoral services.
* In partnership with staff, assists/counsels participants/families in advance care planning end of life care decisions.
* Serves as a resource for other team members, and be available to coordinate with other spiritual care providers the participant /family may have identified.
* Plans, assists with, and conducts interfaith worship, prayer services, memorial services, and other group activities.
* Educates interdisciplinary teams on spiritual needs of older adults and serve as a resource on spirituality and related pastoral concerns.
* Offers participants/families of different philosophies and religious beliefs opportunities to discuss and share their thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and values.
* Documents counseling provided in the participant's medical record.
* Works with other professionals in resolving spiritual/pastoral/ethical issues.
* Works in a team approach with members of the IDT to evaluate participant/family response to care.
* Develops and works in collaboration with community religious representatives to provide continuity of spiritual care to participants.
* Acts as a resource to staff for bereavement support.
* Participates in Behavior Health and Interdisciplinary Care Team meetings and assist in developing and reviewing care plans.
* Supports strategic planning to integrate spiritual care and services across Centers.
* Leads spiritual groups and makes presentations on spiritual care services.
* Proactively communicates with participants and families about spiritual care services.
* In collaboration with spiritual care team and other disciplines, helps to develop, implement and evaluate spiritual care services for outcomes and quality improvement.
* Attend in-services and staff meetings as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Master's Degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, Psychology, required.
* 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), required.
* Board Certification Chaplain, preferred
* Two (2) years of experience in health care, palliative care, hospice or hospital chaplaincy or equivalent, preferred.
* Expertise in differing theological points of view, rituals, customs and beliefs.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills,
* Computer skills (Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook. Preferable to have experience with using electronic medical records.
* Bilingual preferred

The candidate must meet ONE of the following requirements:
BS or BA in theology, religion, human services, counseling, psychology, or sociology from a college or university and/or as required by state-specific regulations.
A Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, theology or divinity from a college or university and/or as required by state-specific regulations. (Preferred.)
A minimum of one unit of Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE)-accredited CPE.
Note a degree received from an accredited college/university is preferred. If the degree is received from a non-accredited college or university, AVPO approval is required prior to hire.
Additional Experience:
Two years of active work in spiritual care ministry/ program, one unit of pastoral education (per state requirements, if indicated), and demonstrated ability to work with patients, families, and community spiritual leaders of various denominations/beliefs is required.
Three years of active work in hospice spiritual care support and one year of clinical pastoral education is preferred.
