Reporting to the Director of Spiritual Care and Education, the Chaplain is responsible for responding to the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff throughout the organization. The Chaplain provides spiritual support to patients and their loved ones who are confronting serious illness, making difficult treatment decisions, feeling alienated or alone, or experiencing conflict, despair or feelings of hopelessness. The Chaplain functions as a team member of the Department of Spiritual Care and Education at Mount Sinai Hospital and throughout the Mount Sinai Health System, and establishes collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary care team, other professionals and the community.
Responsibilities
Visits patients on assigned floors, throughout the hospital, and, as appropriate, in outpatient settings.
Assesses patient and family spiritual and/or religious needs, supports with appropriate interventions, and assesses outcomes.
Demonstrates necessary chaplaincy knowledge and skills.
Communicates effectively with patients of all demographics served by hospital.
Participates in on-call rotation as needed.
Maintains relationships with medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments as representative of Department of Spiritual Care and Education.
Participates in interdisciplinary meetings in assigned patient care areas.
Provides care and support to hospital staff.
Liaises as needed with hospital priests and community clergy to ensure patients religious needs are met.
Mentors and orients clinical pastoral education students, and teaches didactics as requested.
Participates in organizing and leading holiday services, memorials, and special events as well as activities connected to Spiritual Care Week and Nurses Week.
Fulfills documentation requirements, including appropriate charting in the electronic medical record.
Presents on spiritual care topics to outside departments and/or units, as requested.
Serves on hospital committees as invited.
Participates in maintenance of proper administration procedures for department in accordance with institutional policies.
Adheres to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains.
Maintains board-certification by national chaplain association.
Other relevant duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Masters degree with a focus in theology or related fields preferred.
Successful completion of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program

Duties Description Chaplains conduct religious services and provide spiritual guidance for individuals admitted to a State facility, as well as staff. Duties include, but are not limited to:
* May establish periods for worship, conducts religious services, and administers rites and sacraments;
* May provide pastoral care in order to develop good relationships with all who are served, with particular attention to those newly admitted to the facility;
* May counsel individuals going through an emotional and spiritual crisis, the critically ill, the dying, and/or those about to be released, on personal and spiritual problems;
* May conduct a religious education program through planning and organizing instructional classes, group discussions, forums, broadcasts, and group music programs;
* May work closely with all departmental staff and community-based organizations to further the rehabilitation of individuals admitted to a State facility;
* May speak before community and other groups on the program(s) of the assigned facility(ies);
* May consult with the facility head and other chaplains on the coordination of the religious program and its relationship with the overall functions of the facility;
* May aid in selecting religious books and equipment for purchase and to be donated;
* May maintain records of religious activities;
* May recruit volunteers to assist with different faiths;

Minimum Qualifications Candidates must possess ecclesiastical endorsement from the official endorsing agency of the Chaplain's faith or denomination at the time of appointment and maintain such endorsement for the duration of their employment.

Responsibilities
Follow the CCA Team Member Handbook and other training materials.
Provide 24/7 on-call support to assigned employees and owners.
Throughout CCA, promote the importance of a missionary mindset by building caring relationships with all assigned employees.
Strive to build and maintain clear two-way communication and trust throughout CCA and with companies served.
Help grow CCA through the support of qualified lead generation and development support.
Display and promote a team player attitude with fellow chaplains and managers.
Comply with requests and direction from a senior CCA leader.
Qualifications

Minimum of 5-7 years of full time secular workplace experience. A business degree can reduce this requirement. (Church work time does not count as workplace experience.)
Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Biblical Studies from an accredited college or university, Master of Divinity (preferred).
Required technology skills include ability to use a computer and software (such as Word & Excel), Internet, and cell phone.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Summary:
Under the direction of a certified chaplain, the chaplain ministers to patients and families in regard to religious/spiritual beliefs. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support for patients, families and staff within the context of illness, suffering, loss, and death. Chaplains complete documentation including spiritual assessment, as well as on-going ministry in assigned areas.

EDUCATION
For Chaplains hired prior to 12/20/09 -Chaplains will be grandfathered to the following education.
* Ecclesiastical endorsement required
* Twenty (20) Units of Continuing Education Units (CEU) annually required

* Minimum of two (2) units of Clinical Pastoral Education required

EXPERIENCE

* Must be in good standing to serve as a professional chaplain according to the code of ethics for spiritual care professionals and the standards of practice for professional chaplains. Should the chaplain characterize or hold themselves out to be a member of any religious clergy, he or she must be held as a member in good standing of same religious clergy or order at all times while employed at Catholic Health.
* Two (2) years of experience in health care ministry
* Twenty (20) Units of CEU annually required
