The Exhibits Preparator: 1) Assists in the planning, preparation, design, fabrication, and installation of temporary, permanent and traveling museum exhibitions. 2) Participates in the prototyping process, by designing and fabricating exhibits, testing them with visitors, and making necessary changes to improve the visitor experience. 3) Performs maintenance of exhibits, procures materials, and maintains shop cleanliness and safety. 4) Coordinates the care for live animal exhibits throughout the museum. We are looking for candidates that have 3-5 years of experience in exhibit preparation including carpentry, mountmaking, metal work, painting, lighting, and exhibit fabrication. Candidates should demonstrate working knowledge of display techniques and specifications including understanding of various materials used in fabricating displays. Effective communication skills are required to collaborate with team members, interpret instructions, and present exhibit preparation information. Responsibilities 1. Coordinates traveling exhibits; ensures proper storage and moving techniques are used. 9. Improvise when resources such as funding, time and physical space are limited. 10. Acquire new job skills through museum funded professional development opportunities. Minimum Qualifications Successful completion of an approved apprenticeship program in carpentry, or four years of professional carpentry experience, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a commitment to provide excellent customer service; and effective communication skills required.
