The essential responsibilities for the Carpenter may include, but are not limited to, the following: Estimates dimensions such as height, width, and length as required for projects. Performs carpentry maintenance and repair tasks by: Inspecting work sites to determine necessary materials, tools, and equipment. Developing project plans or following blueprints, sketches, or schematics. Assembling, fabricating, installing, and repairing materials, equipment, and fixtures. Providing cost estimates for repairs or replacements beyond capability. Recommending additional personnel or contractors as needed to meet deadlines. Conducts skilled carpentry work related to construction, maintenance, repair, remodeling, and alteration of building structures and facilities, including: Working with materials such as wood, plastic, fiberglass, and drywall. Assembling structures using nails, screws, staples, and adhesives. Working on ladders, stilts, or high beams. Ensuring compliance with building codes and specifications. Using tools such as levels, rules, plumb bobs, framing squares, and surveying equipment. Installing prefabricated structures, cabinets, molding, and furniture. Constructing stairs, mantels, concrete forms, and tunnel bracing. Erecting scaffolding and replacing building components such as ceiling tiles, doors, and windowpanes. Painting, moving, and installing machinery as needed. Utilizes hand and power tools, including saws, hammers, chisels, drills, presses, sanders, joiners, planers, panel saws, and mortising machines, to complete projects. Provides technical input on carpentry equipment purchases based on department needs. Maintains accurate records of time, materials, and project status, providing periodic reports to the Carpenter Foreman. Actively supports the Port's mission and vision and demonstrates values consistently. Works effectively as a team player with all Port employees. Supports the overall success of the Facilities Maintenance Department by completing other tasks and duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a carpentry vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program is preferred. Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of experience in carpentry or building trades required, or any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required skills and abilities to competently perform the job. Five (5) years of progressively responsible construction experience is preferred. License/Certification: Valid, unrestricted driver's license. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card) upon hire required. Valid man-lift certification and welder's certification preferred, or willingness and ability to obtain. Analytical skills: Ability to collect and analyze data, apply logical reasoning, and develop solutions based on relevant factors. Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively convey messages across all levels of the organization. Organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, balance priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Problem solving skills: Ability to logically assess issues, gather information, and implement effective solutions. Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to utilize job-related software. Coordinate placement of job site sign at the start of a job and remove upon completion of job. Perform all carpentry labor and assign tasks to carpenters, coworkers, and helpers. Ensure work being performed is done in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. Coordinate in conjunction with the office all subcontractors in a knowledgeable manner. Be sure to give them ample lead time and have the job ready for them to do their work. Ensure that they get timely inspections on their work. Anticipate ongoing needed materials, supplies and drawings well in advance. Create material lists and arrange for their delivery/pickup in will-call; be sure to check material deliveries for accuracy in quantity and measurement, as well as for any quality problems or damage. The delivery driver is to wait for your inspection and approval, noting any problems on the ship list. Track & enter all jobsite activities in Project Management software. Accurately detail job details on timesheet; ensure all other employees do the same. This is a critical step for accurately tracking job costs. Recycle and/or re-use as much as economically possible. Review all customer change orders with the PM/Site Super. They will calculate price; then change order to be signed by customer prior to work being completed. Walk through job site with Project Manager and/or client on jobs that need attention to make sure all items are completed. Compare plans and contract specs as an additional verification. Coordinate with the office, client, or owner rep to schedule all necessary inspections with the building department. As the job nears completion, create a punch-list of any outstanding items for Project Manager. The goal is for a zero punch-list job-long punch-lists rob our profits. Leave the job neat and clean, removing all tools, garbage cans and jobsite sign(s). Actively participate in weekly production meeting with all team members. During rain periods, report to the jobsite with Carpenters Helper and cover exposed area of house with tarp/plastic cover; minimizing any possibility of water entering the home. Gather receipts of expenses and categorize them accordingly so they can get billed correctly. (DCB Expense, DC Structures expense, Truck Fuel, Equipment Fuel, Billable to client) if you have questions ask the pm site super staff. Then label receipts and upload them to the files in BT Daily logs. Coordinate daily with Safety Coordinator to ensure safety meetings and requirements are held to OSHA's standards, documented, and stored in the Safety Dropbox folder.
