Incumbents are responsible for the Tugboat and Barge while these vessels are underway going to or returning from a marine project site. Typically, they will work closely with the Project Superintendent, General Foreman, Barge Foreman, Crane Operators, Welders, Laborers, Helpers and other skilled or semi-skilled crafts persons. Specific Responsibilities: Works as assigned by the General Foreman to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new marine construction projects. Operates the tugboat and barge while these vessels are in transit to and from marine project locations and doing so in a safe and efficient manner. Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) is seeking experienced and well-qualified part-time / on-call small boat Captains to provide vessel support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) in Key Largo, FL. Designated on November 16, 1990, FKNMS protects 3,800 square miles of waters surrounding the Florida Keys, from south of Miami westward to encompass the Dry Tortugas, excluding Dry Tortugas National Park. Within the boundaries of the sanctuary lie spectacular, unique, and nationally significant marine resources including North America's only coral barrier reef, extensive seagrass beds, mangrove-fringed islands, shipwrecks and other archeological treasures and more than 6,000 species of marine life. FKNMS operates a fleet of small boats and uses these vessels to support science, resource management, and stewardship of the resources within the Sanctuary. Operations performed by part-time/on-call Captains will include working dives in support of NOAA's Mission: Iconic Reefs, a large-scale coral restoration effort in the Florida Keys. Restoration efforts include outplanting of corals grown in a nursery and site preparation at Carysfort Reef, Horseshoe Reef, Cheeca Rocks, Newfound Harbor, Eastern Dry Rocks, Sombrero Reef and Looe Key Reef. These sites represent the iconic diversity and productivity of Florida Keys coral reefs, spanning the geographic extent of the region, a variety of habitats, and a range of human uses. The part-time boat captain prepares and operates The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) boats during college-sanctioned events. Hours will vary according to need and will be determined on a weekly basis. This position typically maintains a 5 to 25-hour work schedule and reports to the Director, Marine Science and Technology, or designee. Examples of Duties 1. Prepares CFK vessel(s) for operation. 2. Maintains strict inventory and control of all equipment on the vessel. 3. Provides a safety briefing to passengers. 4. Refuels the vessel after use. 5. Ensures the college vessel has all necessary and required safety equipment as required by U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations for safe vessel operations. 6. Department The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory Responsibilities Seeking highly motivated and organized individuals for a part-time, as needed, alternate boat captain/first mate on board the RV Apalachee, a 65-ft (80 ton), twin engine research vessel. The position will require abilities for precise vessel maneuvering, extensive nighttime work, and deployment of a variety of oceanographic equipment and fishing gears.
