The Pilot in Command (PIC), or Second in Command, is responsible for the safe, efficient and expeditious operation of all company aircraft. The Pilot-In Command is the final authority in determining that the aircraft is in Airworthy condition and is in safe operating condition. The PIC conducts preflight inspections, researches departure, en routes, and destination weather for suitability to the intended operation, performs aircraft weight and balance computations and performance calculations and determines whether all are within manufacturers' limitations, certificating authorities' regulations, and company policies. Files flight plans for all flights and ensures that all aircraft and passenger forms are completed and all filing and notification requirements are met for flights. The Captain is responsible for the safe conduct of flights while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, local and foreign regulations, as well as the policies and procedures specified in the company operations manual. When assigned to a flight, the Captain has the final authority in the operation of the aircraft.

Serves as the on-site company representative working in cooperation with company maintenance personnel with contract maintenance facilities for unplanned maintenance events
Conducts mission briefings and debriefings with other crewmembers assigned to the flight
Maintains effective crew coordination

Informs maintenance technicians about any mechanical irregularities noted during the flight and documents discrepancies on the appropriate documents

Work Environment
As a Fighter Pilot, missions and assignments can be anywhere around the globe. This includes working from carrier battle groups, or other sea-based platforms, and at Naval Air Stations or other locations on shore.
Training & Advancement
Those entering aviation programs must first attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, RI, and then complete a six-week air indoctrination course at Naval Aviation Schools Command, in Pensacola, FL. From there, prospective Fighter Pilots attend primary flight training.
Candidates then request an aircraft pipeline and enter the intermediate phase of flight training, which builds upon basic flight and navigation training. The final phase is advanced naval flight training, focusing on mission specifics. After completion, prospective Fighter Pilots are awarded their "wings of gold" and report to their respective Fleet Replacement Squadrons (FRSs) for further training specific to their aircraft.
Promotion opportunities are regularly available but competitive and based on performance.
