Position Purpose
A Driver in Training will be trained by Transportation staff to obtain a commercial driver's license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement. This is a Part-Time Hourly position not to exceed 90 days. Upon successful completion of necessary classroom and behind-the-wheel training requirements for the position, the Driver in Training will transition to a School Bus Driver role.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
* Attends all assigned training, safety meetings, and in-service meetings.
* Attends all classroom preparation for written exams.
* Performs behind-the-wheel preparation for road tests.
* Participate in training to learn to maintain bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections.
* Participate in training to learn to maintain order and discipline among students on bus following District policies and procedures regarding disciplining of students and contact with school officials and parents.
* Participate in training to learn to fuel and clean exterior and interior of buses including picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, wiping upholstery, and cleaning headlights.
* Participate in training to learn to utilize two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication.
* Participate in training to learn to perform first aid according to established guidelines and procedures.
* Rides along with Bus Drivers on regular and special events to learn routes and practical application of student management techniques.
Safety
* Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
* Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, and reflector.
* Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing.
