1937

In 1937 his Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, for string orchestra, won him international acclaim.

1945

The poem also inspired his first opera, Peter Grimes, which opened in 1945, and featured Pears in the lead role.

1953

And despite a threatening visit from the police in 1953, they were more or less permitted to live together openly.

1958

An earlier church-pageant opera, Noye’s Fludde (1958), made use of one of the medieval Chester mystery plays.

1962

But pride of place must go to his dramatic works: his War Requiem (of 1962) and his fifteen operas.

1976

In June 1976 he was created a life peer, the first musician or composer to be elevated to the peerage.

He died in nearby Aldeburgh on December 4, 1976, at the age of 63.

1990

Owner Paul Britten moved it to Michigan about 1990.
