The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled labor of a physically demanding nature, in the construction, maintenance and repair of water, wastewater, or gas distribution system. Positions in the Gas and Wastewater Departments are subject to 24-hour call.
Examples of Duties
Digs holes, lines, trenches, and ditches using the necessary tools and equipment, for the purpose of preparing the site for the laying of pipe.
Prepares pipe for installation; threads and cuts pipe to required specifications.
Constructs, maintains, and repairs existing gas utility system, lift systems, and manholes using methods approved by the department.
Takes measures to protect utility lines from corrosion; follows department guidelines for inspecting the assigned system; performs routine maintenance; reports problems with lines needing repair.
May have lead worker responsibility over subordinates involved in various construction and maintenance activities in the absence of the supervisor.
Fits and installs wastewater piping for the collection system.
Cleans and maintains equipment; prepares required equipment and supplies for assignments and transports equipment to job sites.
Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; operates and maintains, mini excavator, pipe cut-off saw, probe rod, pipes and fittings, shovels, etc.
Typical Qualifications
High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years experience in the construction, repair, and/or maintenance of pipelines, preferably in a utility system; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. Must be able to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within one month of hire.
Gas Department must obtain certifications as required by the Office of Pipeline Safety within six (6) months of hire.
Wastewater Department may be required to obtain and maintain a valid Louisiana Class A or B commercial driver's license and prefers a valid Wastewater Collection Class II Certification.
Water Department prefers a valid Water Distribution Class II Certification.
