The size of the bakery you work in might influence your job responsibility, but your primary duties include greeting and establishing rapport with customers, taking and filling customer's bakery orders, operating cash registers and POS machines, and generally keeping the reception area tidy.

You must be knowledgeable about the bakeries products and services as you will have to respond to customers' inquiries and complaints. Your other responsibilities include applying price tags and ingredient tags to goods, attractively arranging baked goods on display cases and shelves, and ensuring the shelves get restocked when the snacks start getting depleted.

A good bakery clerk should have excellent communication skills, basic computer skills, and math skills. You must have sufficient upper body strength to lift large and heavy cakes and other baked goods and possess the skills needed to operate a cash register. A high school diploma will suffice for this role. The mean annual salary is $29,000.
