The Fair Housing Unit is responsible for enforcement of national and most state fair housing laws through direct representation of low-income Maine residents who have experienced violations of their rights as protected class members; through community engagement, education, and partnership; and through systemic testing. Through enforcement actions, the Unit provides direct representation in the administrative complaint process through the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and/or the Maine Human Rights Commission. The Unit is also expected to provide direct representation in court on a regular basis in the Maine State District Court, the Superior Court, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and/or Maine Federal District Court. While many cases are resolved in the administrative summary proceedings and can be completed with 10 to 15 hours of legal work time, others present more complex issues and require lengthier engagement, including through affirmative litigation. The position will primarily be located in in South Paris, covering Oxford County. The position will have additional responsibility for cases in either Sagadahoc or Franklin County, depending on the successful applicant. This AAG position is a member of the Attorney General's Drug Task Force, responsible for managing and prosecuting a high-volume caseload of drug-related offenses. The management of this caseload involves providing proactive direction/oversight to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA), Maine State Police, as well as county and municipal law enforcement agencies within the jurisdiction that are engaged in the investigation of drug-related offenses. This includes the need to provide legal advice on 4th, 5th and 6th Amendment issues; review and/or draft affidavits in support of arrest and search warrants; issue subpoenas or other court processes to further criminal investigations; participate in proffer interviews of confidential informants and/or cooperating defendants; assist law enforcement in the investigation and prosecution of overdose death cases; draft appellate briefs and conduct oral argument before the Law Court; and manage a trial schedule that requires pre-trial motions, trials and post-judgment motions.
