Within NGS, the Science & Innovation team is a department that oversees the Society's grantmaking efforts in science, conservation and technology, develops and manages major mission programs, and establishes programmatic partnerships with like-minded non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Over the last fifteen years, Pristine Seas, National Geographic's flagship ocean conservation program has helped to inspire the protection of 29 of the last wild places in the ocean, encompassing more than 6.7 million square kilometers of ocean. Additionally, we aim to cultivate and expand a network of best-in-class partners to build a community of support for protected areas. We are seeking a Fish Ecologist, Research, Pristine Seas to support and scale our approach over the next five years
The Fish Ecologist for Pristine Seas conducts high-impact scientific research in furtherance of the Pristine Seas' mission. The candidate will conduct coral reef research on expeditions, support the production of high-quality scientific reports and publications, and provide input to inform decision-makers regarding the necessity of protecting the last wild places in the ocean
The Fish Ecologist reports to the VP of Research and will be part of a cohesive, collaborative, and high-performing research team. The research team is comprised of experts from a wide variety of marine disciplines; we value adaptability, curiosity and scientific rigor and value team members that enjoy collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team and are thoughtful and respectful of other cultures and partners with whom we work. They will contribute to the Pristine Seas research program by facilitating research planning for Pristine Seas expeditions, participating in field research expeditions, analyzing scientific data, and contributing to the writing of reports and peer-reviewed publications.
This is a fixed-term role through December 2030.
Your Impact
Marine Expeditions (40%)
Lead scuba-based fish surveys while on expedition at a high level of taxonomic resolution
Collaborate with VP of Research and participate in at least 2 and up to 3 expeditions per year
Be the scientific lead for an expedition at least once every two years. This involves multiple trips to the country prior to and after the expedition.
Assist in development of expedition science plans.
Assist with operation and execution of existing pristine seas data collections methods as needed in the field.
Data Analysis and Reporting (40%)
Contribute to all expedition reports (2-3 per year)
Lead the writing and synthesis of at least one expedition scientific report every other year
Collaborate with scientists from around the world in the creation of high-impact scientific publications, which utilize Pristine Seas data and research to highlight the importance of these remote areas in better understanding how pristine ecosystems function.
Lead the production of at least one scientific publication in a peer-reviewed journal each year.
Participate in conferences to report on Pristine Seas scientific findings, as agreed upon with the Executive Director.
Disseminate scientific information to a variety of stakeholders from academics, to government agencies, local communities, and school groups.
Policy activities (10%)
Provide oral briefings, presentations, written material and occasional on-camera appearances in supporting media to support Pristine Seas' mission.
Provide content and review Pristine Seas policy documents, presentations, and briefing materials.
Programmatic Activities (10%)
Work with the Communications and Education teams to disseminate research
Assist in developing educational products in collaboration with the NGS Education department.
Support the purchasing of scientific gear and other administrative needs for the science team.
What You'll Bring
Educational Background
Masters Degree in relevant field required
PhD in Marine Biology or a related field is strongly preferred.
Post-doctoral experience is preferred.
Minimum Years and Types of Experience
10+ years of professional work experience in marine science and conservation.
Established peer-reviewed publication record, including first authored manuscripts.
Experience with non-profit, environmental, academic, and governmental organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
The salary range for this position is $104,500 - $110,000.

Remote Aquatic Ecologist Job
Audubon Texas is a leader and integral member of a community of conservation practice, founded in a 100-year legacy of coastal stewardship while establishing innovative programs to protect, conserve, and enhance habitat for a wide variety of bird species throughout the Lone Star State and beyond. The Range Ecologist will be primarily focused on conservation delivery in North Texas, with some work in other parts of the state and beyond as opportunities and capacity permit.
The Range Ecologist will work closely with local landowners to implement working lands conservation programs, including the Audubon Conservation Ranching (ACR) Program and a variety of voluntary Rangeland and grassland conservation tools. The Range Ecologist will work in partnership within a community of practice including migratory bird joint ventures, conservation organizations, and agencies to deliver robust private landowner programming. Audubon's working lands programs in Texas aim to improve private landowners' ability to practice bird-friendly land management. The Range Ecologist will be responsible for engaging, cultivating, and enrolling landowners into these programs and assisting them with implementation of innovative land management practices.
Through the development of habitat management plans (HMPs), an integral ACR conservation tool, the Range Ecologist will partner with landowners to determine land management goals and ensure program compliance. These HMPs support practices such as adaptive grazing, prescribed fire, grass and rangeland restoration, invasive species removal, and establishing rotational grazing infrastructure. HMPs rely on the designation of priority grassland bird species for each ranch or project site. The Range Ecologist will also conduct vegetation diversity and use monitoring to ensure landowners are compliant with program goals and are enhancing their grasslands to benefit grassland birds.
This position is a remote with work being done in the field, specifically in the North Texas region, with some duties in other parts of the state and New Mexico as opportunities and capacity permit.

Liaise with landowners providing excellent technical service to agricultural producers participating in Audubon's working lands conservation programs. Specifically,
Facilitate demand for Audubon conservation programs through partnerships with local agencies and organizations.
Connect with local conservation professionals and organizations to deliver programs and recruit new program participants.
Provide timely access to financial assistance programs for enrolled ranches, through Audubon, local, state, and federal financial assistance opportunities. Refer producers to partner conservation programs when applicable.
Establish and maintain professional relationships with ranchers and landowners participating in Audubon's working lands programs.
Communicate program goals and work with rancher/landowner to develop site-specific farm habitat conservation plans for each assigned ranch or project.
Execute agreements and plan projects for landowners participating in financial assistance conservation programs.
Facilitate enrollment process and assist Audubon project budget tracking.
Apply a new, decision-support tool to the Matagorda Bay watershed to help ranchers and partners identify conservation priorities.
Advocate for science-supported habitat management on partner lands.
Establish habitat management plans using SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time sensitive) goals on all enrolled program ranches.
Conduct and/or oversee essential avian and grassland monitoring on program lands.
Identify monitoring needs regarding avian and vegetation communities; develop and implement monitoring techniques to address land use, avian density and occupancy, and vegetation response to disturbance.

The Office of Building Water System Oversight (BWSO) within the Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) is responsible for conducting inspections to ensure compliance with various rules and regulations aimed at improving the operating conditions of various engineered systems such as cooling towers, water tanks, evaporative condensers, internal plumbing, and wastewater systems in order to prevent risks associated with these systems.

Qualifications
1. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in one of the following areas of study: environmental or chemical engineering, limnology, environmental science, marine science, geology, biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, or health science; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with 24 semester credits in one or a combination of the areas of study described in ""1"" above, at least 12 of which must have been in one of these areas of study; and at least one year of satisfactory full time experience, which may not have been part of graduate or undergraduate course work, working in the field of water quality planning, management or
research or performing environmental laboratory analyses, and/or environmental field sampling of water; or
3. An associate degree from an accredited college or university including or supplemented by 24 semester credits in one or a combination of the areas of study described in "1" above, at least 12 of which must have been in one of these areas of study; and at least three years of satisfactory full time experience as described in "2" above.
Additional Requirements
To be assigned to Assignment Levels II or III, all candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university as described in "2" above and must have one additional year of the experience described in "2" above for a total of two years of experience.
Special Note
A master's degree from an accredited college in one of the areas described in "1" above may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience.
