Sephora was launched in 1970 in Limoges, France. It was acquired by Dominique Mandonnaud in 1993 who merged the purchase with his perfume chain under the Sephora brand. Mandonnaud is credited with designing and executing Sephora's "assisted self-service" sales experience.
Mandonnaud continued to expand the Sephora brand through the 1990s and opened its flagship store in Champs Elysees in 1997. That same year, Mandonnaud sold Sephora to LVMH, which expanded the stores globally and bolstered the chain's product offerings to include beauty and cosmetic products.
Sephora extended its operations into the Middle East in 2007 and opened over 44 stores in the UAE and KSA as well as an e-commerce store. Sephora opened its first store in the United States in 1998, its first in Canada in 2004, and its first in Australia in 2014. Sephora currently has 430 stores across North America.
Sephora has continued to broaden its portfolio by opening stores within JCPenney and Kohl's store locations. While these Sephora locations are much smaller than the freestanding stores, they broadened Sephora's customer base and expanded the reach of its products.
In 2022, Sephora's annual revenue was $10 billion and it had approximately 28,000 employees.
