What should I study to become a nurse practitioner?

By Roger Raber - Apr. 2, 2023

In addition to pursuing their RN certification, aspiring nurse practitioners should study subjects ranging from anatomy and physiology to psychology. Nurse practitioner schools accept candidates with a wide range of experience. As a result of these varied experiences, areas of study may vary.

A four-year RN nursing degree covers many areas of study required by a nurse practitioner school. There are nursing schools that will accept candidates with an associate's degree in nursing, but it may be necessary to prove that certain prerequisite coursework has been completed.

In addition to anatomy and physiology, chemistry, microbiology, and nutrition courses are required.

Those entering an advanced practice registered nurse program can expect to earn this higher credential two years after earning their RN. Some accredited programs are very regimented in their progression, while others offer flexibility.

Entering one of these programs with less than your RN will result in additional time spent on prerequisite coursework. A BS in another field may help someone with an ADN fulfill the required coursework, as some knowledge gained in pursuing their BS is transferable.
