What makes a good therapist?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Jun. 12, 2023

A good therapist has incredibly evolved listening skills, has the desire to work with and help others, and is willing to be flexible. Good therapists are extremely important as they can do many great things and help their clients in many different ways.

It may seem obvious that a good therapist is a good listener, but there is more than just being a good listener. A good therapist has worked to gain important listening skills. They are active listeners who can take notes, and think through how to help their patients in real time, all while being able to listen to not only words but how the patient presents themselves.

A good therapist also has a desire to help others. Good therapists genuinely want to help their patients get better and work through their issues. This often requires a great deal of patience, especially with difficult patients, but if that desire can continue, they can be great therapists.

Because not every person and every situation is not the same, therapists must be able to be adaptable and flexible to be good therapists. Sometimes, what works for one patient does not work for another, so changing plans and being flexible is crucial for therapists.
