Nurse practitioners can function independently to perform medical care across the lifespan of an individual. Unlike a typical RN, nurse practitioners can prescribe medications and modalities as necessary. Nurse practitioners facilitate the process of care for patients from general health to illness, as well as pre and post-surgical care.

There are several areas of specialty that a nurse practitioner can focus on. However, their primary role is to act as the primary care provider for their patients. They are able to provide care without the direct supervision of a physician.
