What is the hierarchy of judges?

Judges can work at many different local courts, and there isn't a specific hierarchy within those, but a hierarchy does exist. Both civil and criminal courts have different responsibilities and tasks, but both can prepare a judge to move up.

Most judges begin working for a small location, like a single city, then move up to sub and county court.

From county courts, judges can move into working state courts positions, such as the state supreme court and district court. These high state-level possessions are often referred to as high court positions. Many stay in these positions for the rest of their careers, but district court provides more growth opportunities.

The US Court of Appeals is formed by people with experience in district courts. They oversee district courts and also make decisions on specialized cases at a federal level. They can enact permanent federal laws.

The US Supreme Court is the highest in the United States and is at the top of the hierarchy of judges. Once obtained, one can hold this position for the rest of their lifetime.

They have the extreme power to make significant changes to the fundamental structure of the United States, so it is important that these judges truly grasp the law and its importance.
