What is the career path for a video editor?

Assistant video editors are responsible for helping the senior editors in reviewing footage, logging shots, compiling footage, and preparing equipment. Working alongside the primary editor gives you the hands-on experience and history you need to move to that position.

The production assistant role is another stepping stone to being a video editor. It gives an opportunity to become familiar with every team on the set. You become fully familiar with the process in its entirety. Starting at the bottom and becoming familiar with everything give you ample skills to fill your resume for climbing the ladder.

Freelancing is another option. It comes with long hours, being your own assistant, and finding your own projects. However, you do get to make your own hours and can work from where you want. On the other hand, working for a company ties you to a location and specific hours, but you will always have work. A company also advocates for you. There are benefits to both, it comes down to which you prefer more.
